GENERAL NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced administrative work in the county police department. An employee in this class is responsible for numerous miscellaneous office functions. Duties are performed under standard supervision.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to type 60 words per minute with accuracy.
  • Meet all requirements set forth by the Kenton County Merit Board.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift forty (40) pounds or more to a height of four (4) feet or more.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Eye sight must be correctable to 20/20 vision.
  • Hearing must be within normal acceptable range of 20-25 with or without a hearing aid.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Types letters, documents, reports, forms and other material.
  • Receives visitors to the administration section of the department.
  • Files correspondence, documents, reports, forms and other law enforcement related paperwork.
  • Answers telephone calls; handles inquiries and complaints and provides reports to citizens and other involved parties.
  • Gives information and referrals to the general public.
  • Operates a copy machine, computer and other standard office equipment.Sorts and distributes mail and inter-office correspondence.Reviews and routes department bills and credit card statements for approval and enters department requisitions into the countywide finance system
  • Maintains inventory levels for the department which includes ordering uniforms and equipment as well as office and janitorial supplies.
  • Maintains recertification of police equipment and is responsible for getting equipment repaired when needed.
  • Transcribes minutes from department Merit Board meetings.
  • Performs related duties as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to get along with others in the work place and to respect their rights as individuals.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with individuals; ability to comprehend simple verbal orders and to perform the directed task.
  • Knowledge and use of good telephone answering techniques.
  • Ability to read and understand written work directives and to follow written program instructions.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and ability to apply them in work day situations.
  • Good working knowledge of standard office machines including calculator, copy machine, computer terminals and printers, etc.
  • Ability to work effectively on a daily basis with limited supervision.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduate of an accredited high school, or a G.E.D. equivalency certificate from an accredited high school, supplemented by courses in typing, general office procedures and having had experience in performing secretarial duties including contact with the public.
