Oncology Registered Nurse (RN)

Job Description

An opportunity is available for an Oncology Registered Nurse (RN) to join a dynamic healthcare team dedicated to providing exceptional patient care. The RN will work within a Medical Surgical unit focused on oncology patients, supporting a collaborative environment to deliver comprehensive nursing services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality nursing care to oncology patients on a medical surgical unit.
  • Monitor patient conditions and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to implement treatment plans.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
  • Perform patient assessments and maintain accurate documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families regarding care plans, treatment options, and health education.
  • Participate in patient care conferences and contribute to care coordination efforts.
  • Support and maintain a clean and safe working environment.

Qualifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice.
  • 1 year of nursing experience, with at least 1 travel assignment in oncology or related fields.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification preferred.
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification is beneficial for those administering chemotherapy, with a minimum of 2 years of oncology experience required for certification.

Work Schedule

The staff is expected to work 12-hour night shifts from 7 PM to 7 AM, with a rotation for every other weekend and holidays. Shifts will typically begin between 6:45 and 7:15 PM.

Unit Information

  • Unit: Oncology - 7th floor and outpatient care.
  • Bed Capacity: 29 beds.
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Typically 1:5, with occasional 1:6 ratios.
  • Support Staff: Nurse aides are available, generally 3 per day.
  • Common Diagnoses: Acute oncology symptoms, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, sickle cell crisis, hematology issues, medical overflow, end-of-life care.
  • Orientation: Floor-specific orientation will last 3 days.

Additional Information

The position may require rare floating to medical acute settings. Staff will also see outpatient area patients who may require treatment on the floor after hours if needed.
