Oncology Registered Nurse (RN)

We are seeking an experienced Oncology Registered Nurse to join our medical-surgical unit. The ideal candidate will provide compassionate care to oncology patients while adhering to the highest standards of nursing practice.

Job Details

  • Shift: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM
  • Shift Length: 12 hours
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Required Experience: 1 year experience required with at least 1 travel assignment
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holidays: Rotate in with staff
  • Orientation: 3 days of unit-specific orientation

Qualifications

  • Certifications: Current BLS (AHA) certification required; NIHSS preferred
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year in oncology nursing; ONS certification preferred for chemotherapy administration (2 years of experience required for ONS)

Unit Information

  • Unit Type: Medical Surgical (Med Surg)
  • Bed Capacity: 29 beds
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Typically 1:5, with occasional 1:6
  • Common Diagnoses: Acute oncology symptoms, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, sickle cell crisis, hematology, medical overflow, end-of-life care

Nursing Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients in the oncology unit
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed
  • Monitor and record patient vital signs and medical histories
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to develop and implement patient care plans
  • Educate patients and their families about diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and follow-up care
  • Participate in unit activities and quality improvement initiatives

Additional Information

  • Telemetry: Central monitoring available; reading strips is not a requirement
  • Nurse Aides: Yes, typically 3 aides available per day
  • Scrub Color: Caribbean Blue
  • Floating: Rarely to medical acute units
