OverviewINTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY*** The Marion County Public Defender Agency provides legal representation for Marion County residents who cannot afford to hire their own lawyer in matters involving liberty interests, including criminal cases. Services are available for felony, misdemeanor, Title IV D, civil commitment, and juvenile courts, as well as termination of parental rights and appeals. The agency fosters a collaborative work environment to meet the needs of the community.Job SummaryThis position is responsible for providing effective representation of counsel to indigent persons charged with level 1-5 cases in major felony, juvenile, problem‑solving or appellate courts, and representing parents in termination of parental rights proceedings. We value diversity in perspectives and experiences among colleagues and the residents of this city.Position ResponsibilitiesAppear in court to represent indigent clients.Conduct legal and factual review of cases and evaluate evidence.Engage in pretrial motion practice and take/defend depositions.Consult with clients, interview witnesses, and coordinate with experts as needed.Negotiate case disposition, plea agreements, and litigate as required.Maintain regular communication with clients via telephone, in‑person interviews, and jail consultations.Review and update court files, keeping clients and families informed of progress.Delegate assignments to paralegals and investigators when appropriate.Collaborate with social workers on multidisciplinary strategies.Maintain confidentiality at all times.Perform other duties as reasonably assigned by management.Qualifications• Juris Doctorate and license to practice required.• Strong verbal, written, communication and presentation skills.• Proficiency with computer applications.• Valid driver's license.• Must comply with Indiana Public Defender Commission standards and guidelines.• TPR/CHIN Division attorneys must have completed two years of litigation and comply with relevant guidelines.Working ConditionsEssential functions are performed in an office environment with no adverse environmental exposure.Physical ConditionsSitting at a desk for the majority of the day.Lifting or carrying objects of 5–10 pounds.Extended keyboard use.Ability to perceive and hear sounds and see visual cues.Oral communication skill required.Compensation & BenefitsBase salary paid bi‑weekly.
