Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of this position includes budget management and duties to support the research of principal investigators in the Department of Natural Resources. This includes but not limited to: preparation of payroll documents and approving in banner, budget revisions, Aggie Mart purchasing, supporting travel, monitoring budgets, and creating budget reports for research and principal investigators; organizing, filing and maintaining budget information for researchers and/or principal investigators; supporing hiring, posting fiscal information/knowledge, such as, but not limited to, payroll, contracts and grants, or other closely related accounting services.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design offers three undergraduate degrees, a B.S. in Landscape Architecture, a B.S. in Agricultural and Environmental Systems with two concentrations in Environmental Studies, and Sustainable Land and Food Systems,and a B. S. in Biological Engineering. The Landscape Architecture program is LAAB-accredited andis the number 1 producer of African American Landscape Architects. The Biological Engineering program is ABET-accreditedand produces the most African American Biological Engineers in the nation. The Department also offers a Master of Science degree in Agricultural and Environmental Systems (Natural Resources and Environmental Systems) and Ph.D. degree in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Sciences). With programs and expertise in areas such as water quality, bioenergy, biotechnology, sustainable agriculture, soil health, digital agriculture and artificial intelligence, integrated pest management, and environmental sciences, the department uniquely offers innovative and creative educational programs, groundbreaking research, hands-on learning opportunities, and education and outreach activities to citizens across the state and around the world.

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies

Required Competency Verbal Communication Duties

Provides budgetary information to principal investigators (P.I.'s)/researchers, staff and students pertaining to research grants in the Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Design. Takes appropriate action in answering inquiries and questions independently and utilizes a variety of resources in acquiring information.

Understands and communicates rules, regulations and policies governing academic and research for the university, the UNC System as well as federal, state and private sector to P.I.'s/researchers staff and students as it pertains to grants.

Communicates with various offices on campus like the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Agricultural Research, Graduate School, Salary Administration, Division of Research, and agencies off campus in preparing and processing travel arrangements, payroll, budget revisions, purchasing and receiving orders for researchers and/or principal investigators. Provides graduate and undergraduate students with information pertaining to payroll and work responsibilities as it pertains to grant funding and guidelines.

Serves as the approval proxy for the department chair and principal investigators to oversee approving time for P.I's/researchers, staff and students and temporary employees as it relates to research grants. This requires approval of timesheets from off campus when applicable.

Uses judgment and discretion in releasing and withholding confidential information and communicates with people in an effective and tactful manner.

Required Competency Problem Solving Duties

Independently contacts various offices on campus and agencies off campus to resolve grant issues pertaining to payroll for P.I.'s/researchers, staff and students being paid on timely basis as it pertains to research grants. Assists graduate and undergraduate students seeking assistance with tuition by contacting appropriate department as it relates to research grant funding. Also serves as a resource for other P.I's/researchers and staff with graduate tuition remission and internal salary authorization forms as it pertains to grant funding and guidelines.

Required Competency Budgeting Duties

Review requests for expenditures and reimbursements from P.I.'s/researchers for accuracy and availability of funds. Confers with the Office of Agricultural Research and Contracts and Grants to ensure processing. Reconciles research project accounts in consultation with the Office of Agricultural Research and Contracts and Grants and prepares monthly budgetary updates for principal investigators. Reconciles and coordinates procurement cards statements for P.I.'s/researchers in the Department of Natural Resources. Reviews all financial documents for compliance with USDA guidelines; state and federal policies and procedures and apprises P.I.'s/researchers of findings. Prepares budget revisions, as requested. Prepares on-line purchase requisitions for research projects, as requested.

Verifies and submits billing statements to Accounts Payable for payment to vendors. Assists P.I.'s/researchers in the close-out procedures of funded research projects based on grant period for submission of data to the Office of Agricultural Research, Division of Research and Contracts and Grants.
