Position Summary:
The UCLA Center for Health Policy Research (CHPR) is seeking a highly skilled Publications Manager to manage the development, editing, and production of CHPR's publications, including policy briefs, fact sheets, infographics, and reports. One of the nation's leading health policy research institutions, the UCLA CHPR is home to the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) — the largest state health survey in the nation — and produces data and insights that shape policy decisions, inform public understanding, and support the health and wellbeing of diverse communities. The Publications Manager will work closely with researchers, authors, and communications staff to ensure that every publication meets the highest standards of accuracy, clarity, and accessibility. The Publications Manager is the primary copyeditor for publications, and the position requires exceptional writing and editing skills, a sharp eye for detail, and the ability to translate complex data, academic research, and health policy concepts into compelling narratives for a wide range of audiences, including legislators and policymakers, community advocates, researchers, media, and the public. The Publications Manager will coordinate editorial, design, and production schedules, and oversee the review and approval process for publications. They will work with CHPR's designer on reviews of layout, art, and design; incorporate changes from authors and freelancers; and check that all edits are implemented accurately. They will be responsible for ensuring editorial excellence, design consistency, and strategic alignment across all publications. This includes assuring that publications are compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) rules that govern publications posted on the UCLA CHPR website. The Publications Manager also writes and edits copy that support publications, including infographics, key highlights and summaries, publications landing pages and other web content, email blasts, social media, and other content that supports the dissemination of CHPR's work. The ideal candidate is a proactive and versatile communicator with strong project management skills, experience managing editorial workflows in a fast-paced environment, and a deep commitment to public health, health equity, and advancing health policy. The Publications Manager reports to the CHPR's Director of Communications and Publications, and contributes to a collaborative and highly productive Communications Department. This is a hybrid role, with 2–3 days per week in the office required. Please note that additional in-person days may be required based on operational needs. 

Salary & Compensation:

Qualifications:
<ul><li>5-7 years professional writing and communications experience with a media outlet or communications firm, or in a communications position within an entity such as a university, corporation, or nonprofit organization (Required)</li><li>Demonstrated experience editing policy briefs, papers, and fact sheets, with exceptional copyediting and proofreading skills. (Required)</li><li>Experience writing short- and long-form social media copy. (Required)</li><li>Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, Adobe Express) and strong understanding of design concepts. (Required)</li><li>Strong understanding of AP and/or Chicago style. (Required)</li><li>Ability to synthesize complex social science and health policy concepts into clear, compelling language for lay audiences. (Required)</li><li>Expert understanding of web accessibility standards (Section 508, WCAG) and ADA compliance. (Required)</li><li>Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines. (Required)</li><li>Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work both collaboratively and independently. (Required)</li><li>Familiarity with social media platforms and interest in health policy, health care, and current affairs. (Required)</li><li>Subject matter experience developing content related to health and health policy. (Required)</li><li>Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace (Sheets, Forms). (Required)</li><li>Experience with content management systems (especially Drupal), search engine optimization (SEO), and email marketing tools such as Constant Contact. (Preferred)</li></ul>

The incumbent must understand the business of Keck Medicine and its marketing department, communicate with others outside of the health system, and have a presence at specified Keck Medicine/University of Southern California events and department and stakeholder meetings. Essential Duties: Write and edit editorial content for Keck Medicine of USC, such as blog articles, patient stories, magazine articles and bios. Research, verify, read, proof, edit and rewrite copy. Ensure accuracy and completeness of projects. Interview sources when appropriate. Use the department’s tools to conduct strategic analysis and background research, and to develop effective content topic and outputs. Use the department’s software platforms to create multimedia content to be distributed by the social media team. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. Required Qualifications: Req Bachelor’s Degree In Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or related field Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education. Req 3 years minimum experience, 5 years preferred. Req Experience with creating, writing, editing, proofreading, and preparing materials for publication. Req Proven ability as a self-starter and problem-solver who evaluates a situations, articulates possible solutions and earns the respect of others by carefully listening and presenting productive responses. Req Proficiency in Word Office Suite. Req Demonstrate excellent customer service behavior. Req Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills. Req Mastery of AP Stylebook writing guides. <h4>Preferred Qualifications:</h4> Pref Experience writing and editing of materials closely related to health system activities. (Required within LA City only) The hourly rate range for this position is $33.00 - $54.02.
