Chemical Safety Manager

The Chemical Safety Manager is a technical and programmatic leader, responsible for oversight of the University's chemical inventory, manages centralized chemical receiving, and reviews chemical inventory and incoming chemicals for safety. The position assesses chemical hazards and operations, and offers chemical safety assistance, guidance and support to chemical users and assists in the development of technical guidance and other informational materials to promote and enhance chemical laboratory safety and compliance.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Research and Lab Safety within Emergency and Environmental Risk Services, this position supports laboratory chemical safety and facilitates the tracking of all laboratory chemicals at the University. The position assesses chemical hazards and operations, and offers chemical safety assistance, guidance and support to chemical users and assists in the development of technical guidance and other informational materials to promote and enhance chemical laboratory safety and compliance.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, life sciences, bioengineering, chemistry or a related discipline.
• Master's degree preferred.
• 5+ years of experience in an academic or research environment and/or laboratory safety management experience in an organization with diverse research and development activities, preferred.
• Minimum 2 years¿ experience with chemical handling and safety, including familiarity with chemical safety data sheet.
• Minimum 2 years supervisory experience preferred.

Skills and Knowledge

• Strong knowledge of chemicals and related safety and compliance requirements. Functional understanding of research laboratory operations, including chemical, biological, radiological, and physical processes and procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver educational programs, comfortable with public speaking.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly convey complex risks to individuals and groups.
• Strong written, analytical, and organizational skills, with experience preparing reports and interpreting data.
• Demonstrated leadership ability and willingness to take on a leadership role within EHSS.
• Ability to work independently in a complex, decentralized environment.
• Valid NYS driver's license meeting University requirements.
• Current HAZWOPER certification preferred.
• Must be medically fit and able to wear respiratory protection.
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs. and able to handle and maneuver chemical drums, boxes and containers and transport them across campus using carts, dollies and/or University vehicles.
• US DOT and IATA hazardous materials shipping certification preferred.

Responsibilities

Research Chemical Safety Support

• Assists in the management of the Chemical Hygiene Program including participation in chemical laboratory assessments, chemical process evaluations, and SOP development and reviews.
• Provide chemical safety assistance, guidance and support to chemical users and assists in the development of technical guidance and other informational materials to promote and enhance chemical laboratory safety and compliance.
• Supports other EHSS laboratory safety programs and operations including radiation safety, laser safety, controlled substances, and general laboratory safety and programs helps to foster overall safety in the laboratories.
• Support special research safety projects and initiatives and participate in departmental planning and long-term strategy development.
• Perform risk assessments of hazardous materials, processes, equipment, and activities in research labs. Collaborate with researchers to understand operations and identify, communicate, and implement strategies to control hazards and minimize risk.
• Support the research grant review and approval process by evaluating hazards identified in proposals.
• Investigate laboratory accidents and incidents to determine causes and implement corrective actions.

Chemical Receiving and Inventory Management

• Manages, collects, and sustains a university wide research chemical inventory and administers the University's chemical tracking system.
• Reviews chemical inventory and incoming chemicals for safety and compliance and communicates safety and compliance information to chemical users and EHSS leadership.
• Periodically audits/rectifies chemical use area inventories with chemical tracking system information.
• Monitors chemical inventory compliance with applicable regulations and prepares related reports.
• Manages the centralized chemical receiving area including receiving and distributing containers of chemicals to chemical use areas.
• Develops and communicates policies and procedures related to chemical receiving and distribution. Coordinates regulatory related approvals when necessary for incoming chemical purchases

Hazardous Materials Shipping

• Manages hazardous materials shipping operations to assist researchers in properly preparing hazardous material for shipment.
• Works with researchers to identify proper shipping requirements for hazardous materials and dangerous goods. Provides guidance and support for the shipment of outgoing hazardous materials.
• Maintains expertise in complicated hazardous materials shipping regulations to ensure hazardous materials are properly packaged, labeled, and manifested for shipment

Training

• Develop and deliver laboratory safety training for faculty, staff, and students.
• Prepare training materials for in-person and online presentations and maintain training records in the University's learning management system.
• Participates in chemical, biological, and environmental incident investigations and spill response actions including the continued ability to use chemical protective suits, respirators, specialized equipment and air monitoring devices.
