  • Patient Population: Adults in a transplant-focused Progressive Care Unit
  • Typical Patient Ratio: Approximately 1 nurse to 3 patients, based on unit staffing guidelines

  • Float Expectations: Float to units of equivalent or lower acuity as needed

Progressive Care Travel RN Requirements

  • At least 2 years of recent Progressive Care Unit, PCU, stepdown, intermediate care, or equivalent nursing experience
  • Current Registered Nurse license in Ohio or a valid compact nursing license in hand at the time of submission
  • Current ACLS and BLS certifications
  • Recent Epic electronic health record charting experience
  • Demonstrated experience with telemetry monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation, IV starts, central-line and PICC-line care, and blood product administration
  • Experience with transplant care, renal failure, insulin protocols, hemodialysis, feeding tubes, or continuous bladder irrigation is highly valued
  • Education from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited nursing program
  • Two professional references, including at least one reference from a manager, director, supervisor, or other formal leader
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and rotating holidays
  • Willingness to complete required travel nurse credentialing steps promptly before the assignment begins
  • ICU experience is not required; travelers will provide care exclusively to PCU-level patients

PCU Registered Nurse Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, compassionate progressive care nursing to adult patients with complex medical and transplant-related conditions
  • Monitor telemetry, identify dysrhythmias, and promptly communicate changes in patient condition
  • Perform comprehensive assessments, develop and implement individualized care plans, and evaluate patient outcomes
  • Initiate and maintain peripheral IVs and manage central lines, PICC lines, ports, and other vascular access devices
  • Administer blood products, insulin therapies, medications, and other treatments according to established protocols
  • Provide care for patients before and after kidney, liver, and pancreas transplant procedures
  • Support patients with acute kidney injury, renal failure, infection, uncontrolled diabetes, gastrointestinal bleeding, and possible transplant rejection
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, rehabilitation services, social services, and rapid response teams
  • Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately in Epic
  • Float to comparable or lower-acuity units while maintaining high standards of patient safety and teamwork
