First-time travelers are not accepted. Floating may be required to NICU or labor and delivery. Weekends are required to meet staffing needs. The unit provides postpartum care for vaginal or cesarean delivery, tubal ligation, and circumcision. Nursing skills required include administering blood and blood products, managing drains, and using epidural pumps. Experience with PCA pumps, syringe pumps, and wound vacs is necessary. Knowledge of medication management including heparin, insulin, and magnesium sulfate is essential. Care includes OB-GYN, post-operative care, and management of postpartum readmissions. Newborn care must include thermoregulation and glucose management. Skills required: Postpartum care, discharge teaching to parents, infant identification, and newborn assessment. Experience in phototherapy, thermoregulation, and managing newborn hypoglycemia is needed. Ability to manage post-epidural care, pain assessment, and the use of PCA (IV) pumps. Knowledge of bladder assessment, Foley catheter insertion, and breastfeeding instructions is necessary. Experience with episiotomy/ incision care, fundal, lochia, and perineum care is required. Familiarity with the use of electric/manual breast pumps, vaginal delivery, cesarean section, and postpartum hemorrhage is essential. Knowledge of pregnancy-induced hypertension care is also needed. Travelers may be expected to float between nearby facilities. Refusal to float may result in termination of assignment.
