BLS certification is required. Patient-to-nurse ratios are mainly 1:5-6 for both days and nights. Occasionally, there may be a patient ratio of 7 toward the end of the shift, depending on patient acuity. Charge nurses are present on every unit, with day charge nurses not taking on patients. Night charge nurses do take on patients. Nurse aides are utilized in all units. The weekend requirement involves every other weekend, with shifts on Saturday and Sunday for both days and nights. Staff will participate in the holiday rotation schedule. Scrub color is royal blue. Most units have monitor techs, but RNs must be trained to read and interpret rhythm strips. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7. RN responsibilities include managing non-vented patients with BiPAP or CPAP. The pharmacy is in-house and available 24/7. Nursing staff can expect to complete shifts from 7 am - 7 pm or 7 pm - 7 am. Floor-specific orientation will occur with a preceptor for 1-2 shifts. Common diagnoses include CHF, cardiac catheterization, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, orthopedic issues, and oncology. Permanent staff may administer chemotherapy. The manager is open to traveler requests to work primarily in specific designated units and will consider block scheduling. The unit is friendly toward travelers. Floating to critical care may involve patients of a med-surg or stepdown type as needed. Nail enhancements are not permitted. Cancellation policy allows for 2 missed shifts per contract. Charting system in use is EPIC. A BSN is not required for this position, but a valid license is necessary. The trauma level is 2. The care setting is acute. The division is nursing. Shifts are scheduled for days, weekends, and holidays as needed.
