The patient-to-nurse ratio is typically 1:5-6. Float to similar units to care for medical-surgical patients may be required. Coverage for every other weekend is mandatory. Patient diagnoses include colon surgery, Whipple surgery, cholecystectomy, liver resections, bariatric surgery, gynecological surgery, mastectomy, hernia surgery, colitis, pancreatitis, abdominal pain, gastroparesis, bowel obstruction, and Crohn's disease. Basic Life Support certification is required, while Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support is preferred. The unit accepts first-time travelers. Interdisciplinary support is available from physical therapy, respiratory services, interpretation services, phlebotomy, radiology, social services, rapid response teams, and pharmacy. Special equipment used includes Alaris pumps, wound vacs, epidural pumps, and PCA pumps. Travelers must complete an OSHA respirator clearance prior to start and must adhere to fit testing requirements. Clinicians cannot work as travelers past one year and must take a six-month break before returning.
