Job Title: Registered Nurse - Intensive Care Unit Profession: RN Specialty: Intensive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: 1 year(s) License: Active state license required Certifications: BLS, ACLS Must-Have: - Ability to interpret EKG strips - Experience with arterial and central lines - Proficient in care of ventilated patients - Advanced knowledge in titrating vasopressors Description: The unit consists of 20 beds. The nurse to patient ratio is 1 RN to 2 patients. Common diagnoses include Sepsis, ARDS, Pneumonia, AKI, alcohol withdrawal, and overdose. RNs are required to titrate drips, including a variety of vasoactive and cardioactive medications. There is a Charge Nurse and a House Supervisor on each shift. Charge Nurses are free as staffing allows. There is a patient care technician assigned to every 10 patients. Intensivists are present from morning to evening with telemedicine support during off-hours. RNs will troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment such as vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow devices. Telemetry is monitored, but RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting their own EKG strips. Shifts are from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM. Every other weekend is required. Holiday requirements depend on staffing needs. Travelers may float, with guidelines for patient ratios in stepdown and general medical environments. Scrubs are not provided, and no specific colors are required, though sweatshirts are not allowed. Unit specific orientation includes time for learning the charting system, education sessions, and shadowing with a preceptor. The charting system used is EPIC.
