Common diagnoses include CHF, cardiac catheterization, chest pain, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, orthopedics, and oncology. Permanent staff administer chemotherapy. The typical nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:5-6 for both days and nights. Travelers may occasionally have a higher patient load toward the end of a shift, depending on patient acuity. Charge nurses are available on each unit. The day charge does not take patients, while the night charge may take patients. There are certified nursing assistants (CNAs) on the unit. Respiratory therapy is available only for CPAP and BiPap management. Registered nurses are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry strips. All nurses must be knowledgeable in telemetry monitoring and the use of the associated equipment. Self-scheduling is utilized, with a typical schedule made four to six weeks in advance. Travelers are required to work every other weekend and participate in the holiday rotation schedule. Travelers will report to the clinical coordinator's office prior to the shift start time for unit assignments. Assignments may vary, but the focus will primarily be on basic telemetry patients within the nurses' scope of practice. The dress code includes royal blue scrubs for registered nurses. Travelers will receive 1-2 shifts of orientation with a preceptor.
