Nurses must be able to read and interpret strips. Description: This position involves working in a MedSurg/Tele Float Pool. The unit includes several medical-surgical and telemetry units. The nurse-to-patient ratios typically range from 1:5-6 on most units. Occasionally, staff may care for 7 patients towards the end of a shift, depending on patient acuity. Common patient diagnoses include CHF, cardiac catheterizations, chest pain, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, orthopedic cases, and oncology patients. All travelers are expected to titrate drips. However, the unit may have set rate cardiac drips that nurses will manage. Respiratory therapy is available, and RT manages CPAP and BiPAP. The unit is equipped with telemetry monitoring, and most units have monitor techs in place. Nurses are required to work every other weekend, with shifts on Saturdays and Sundays. Travelers will be integrated into the holiday rotation schedule with permanent staff. The hospital utilizes a 12-hour shift format from 7 am to 7 pm. Travelers will receive 1-2 shifts of orientation with a preceptor. Scrubs for nurses are designated as royal blue. Traveling nurses may float to various units but may be assigned to a primary unit for stability. Care should be taken when floating to ensure appropriate patient assignments match the nurse's competency.
