The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1 to 6. BLS certification is required. Common diagnoses include elective surgeries such as hips, knees, and shoulders. There are also patients with fractures from falls and back & neck neuro-surgeries. General MedSurg experience is also important. The unit requires experience with PCA pumps. RNs will administer IV fluids and PCA pumps but will not titrate drips. There is a Charge Nurse available 24/7. The day charge may take patients if necessary. The night charge will always take a full patient assignment. Patient Care Technicians assist on the unit with a goal of having 4 PCTs when the unit is full. PCT duties include taking vitals, FSBS, ADLs, and they can discharge Foley catheters. Respiratory equipment such as CPAP and BiPAP can be managed by respiratory therapy. There is remote telemetry available, monitored by other staff. RNs do not have to read telemetry strips. Nurses work 12-hour shifts from 0700 to 1930 or 1900 to 0730, with a half-hour lunch break. Permanent staff manage their own schedules. Block scheduling is allowed as long as unit needs are met. Every other weekend is required. Weekend shifts for nights are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Holidays will depend on unit needs and staff coverage. Traveling staff may be expected to work holidays if permanent staff is insufficient. Travelers are first to float to other units as needed. Floating is required to any MedSurg units. If floated to telemetry, assigned patients will fall within the RN's skillset. Scrub colors are royal blue, and jackets must also be royal blue if worn. Hoodies and sweat jackets are not permitted. There is a one-day unit-specific orientation followed by time with a preceptor. Additional notes are not applicable. Time-off requests are noted during the screening process. The cancellation policy allows for two shift cancellations for a 13-week assignment. Charting is completed through an electronic system. A BSN is not required for this position.
