Description:
The unit has 20 beds with an average daily census of 16-17 patients.
Pre-COVID, the average was around 14 patients per day.
There are designated rooms available for COVID patients if needed.
Ratios are 1:1-2 for ICU and 1:3 for Stepdown.
The unit supports Stepdown needs for the facility.
They have a designated Charge Nurse available 24/7.
The Charge Nurse responds to all Rapid Responses and codes, but is flexible and will take 1 patient if necessary.
The staffing model also allows for some Capstone students and nursing externs, but they are not counted in the staffing numbers.
Travelers are typically scheduled every other weekend.
Nights fall on Friday and Saturday, while days are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
Holidays are generally avoided for scheduling travelers unless necessary.
The required scrub color is navy blue.
A navy or white jacket and an undershirt in either white or navy are permitted.
Hair must be a natural color, with any distasteful tattoos covered.
Phillips Cardiac Monitors are utilized, and there are no monitor techs on staff.
Each room is hardwired, and data from monitors and vents flows directly into the electronic charting system.
Typical IV drips utilized include moderate conscious sedation, managed by nursing staff.
Respiratory therapy is available 24/7.
Pharmacy services are also available around the clock.
The unit uses a scheduling system that aims to provide schedules at least 2 weeks in advance, covering 4 weeks at a time.
Block scheduling is allowed if included in the contract.
Shifts are organized from Sunday to Saturday.
Travelers usually do not float outside of the unit, although permanent staff may be floated as needed.
The common patient diagnoses range from post-cath lab procedures to those requiring balloon pumps.
No open heart surgeries are performed in this unit.
There is a mandated cancellation policy allowing for a limited number of canceled shifts per assignment.
