Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN)

Unit Overview

The Observation Unit features 16 new observation beds designated for adult patients. This unit is dedicated to the assessment and management of patients requiring outpatient observation prior to discharge or transfer.

Position Summary

This role requires an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to provide high-quality patient care in a fast-paced environment. The RN will be responsible for patient assessment, documentation, and executing nursing interventions to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and document findings accurately.
• Administer medications and perform IV therapy and phlebotomy as needed.
• Monitor cardiac rhythms and perform EKGs.
• Conduct point-of-care testing and ensure that splinting and other treatments are provided per nursing protocols.
• Deliver patient education regarding treatment plans and health management.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to facilitate patient care.
• Adhere to safety protocols and infection control standards at all times.

Patient Demographics

This unit serves an adult patient population with diverse medical needs, requiring strong critical thinking and clinical skills.

Work Environment

The nurse-to-patient ratio is approximately 4:1 or 5:1, depending on unit needs. Flexibility to float between the observation unit, acute medical unit (AMU), and emergency department psych observations is required.

Shift Requirements

Shifts include rotating schedules of days, evenings, and nights. Shifts will be 12 hours in duration, including 7a-7p, 11a-11p, and 7p-7a.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of experience working as a registered nurse, with 2 years of travel experience in acute care settings.
• Active Massachusetts RN license required.
• Certification in BLS, ACLS, and PALS from the American Heart Association is mandatory.
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting tele strips.

Documentation

Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems, specifically Epic, ASAP, and Clin Doc, is preferred.

Skills Required

• General emergency department nursing skills, including assessment, documentation, and patient education.
• Ability to apply critical thinking in high-pressure situations.
• Effective communication skills and teamwork orientation.
