Orthopedic Registered Nurse (RN) – Travel Nursing Contract in Winston-Salem, NC

  • Schedule: 36 hours per week; 12-hour night shifts from approximately 6:45 p.m. to 7:15 a.m.
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work two of three major holidays; holiday time off is not approved
  • Call: None required
  • Patient Ratios: Typically 6–7 patients per nurse
  • Patient Population: Adult orthopedic, neuro-spine, medical-surgical, and post-surgical patients
  • Scheduling: Block scheduling may be available
  • Floating: Must be willing to float to other medical-surgical units or nearby areas as needed
  • Orientation: 36 hours

Orthopedic RN Job Requirements

  • At least 2 years of recent Registered Nurse experience, including strong orthopedic nursing experience
  • Experience caring for orthopedic, spine, post-surgical, hip, and trauma-hip patients
  • Current Registered Nurse license in North Carolina or a compact-eligible state; pending licensure may be considered for submission
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Epic electronic medical record (EMR) charting experience required
  • Ability to successfully complete an EKG competency assessment before the start of the assignment
  • Strong clinical skills with IV initiation, telemetry, dysrhythmia recognition, oxygen therapy, patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), surgical drains, central-line care, blood products, and isolation precautions
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification and charge nurse experience preferred
  • Must be comfortable completing required pre-start education and compliance testing within designated timeframes
  • Previous travel nursing experience preferred; experienced nurses new to travel may be considered with appropriate Epic and orthopedic experience

Orthopedic Travel Nurse Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult orthopedic, neuro-spine, medical-surgical, and post-surgical patients
  • Assess patients, develop and implement individualized care plans, and evaluate clinical outcomes
  • Manage complex postoperative pain regimens and monitor patients receiving multiple pain medications
  • Care for total joint replacement, orthopedic trauma, spinal cord injury, and post-neurosurgical patients
  • Perform and document telemetry assessments, interpret dysrhythmias, and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition
  • Initiate and maintain peripheral IVs, manage central lines, administer blood products, and care for surgical drains
  • Use appropriate oxygen-delivery and noninvasive airway-management techniques, including nasal cannula, high-flow oxygen, and BiPAP/CPAP as indicated
  • Coordinate care with physical therapy, respiratory services, pharmacy, radiology, IV teams, rapid response teams, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team
  • Maintain accurate documentation in Epic and communicate effectively with patients, families, and care teams
  • Float to other units when needed and contribute to a safe, flexible, and patient-centered care environment
