General Information

Location: Puyallup, WA

Facility Type: Level III Trauma Center

Licensed Beds: 375

Total ED Beds: 46 (including 5 Safe Psych rooms)

Average Patient Volume: 200 patients per day

Experience Required: 2 years in Emergency Department (ED)

Traveler Position: First-time travelers are welcome

Patient Types

  • Age Range: Pediatrics to geriatrics
  • Conditions Include: Trauma, GSW, sepsis, COVID, STEMI, Stroke, DKA, mental health issues, respiratory problems, and high acuity medical cases
  • High Geriatric Population: Includes falls and STEMI
  • Pediatric Cases: Limited; generally transferred to a specialized facility

Patient Ratios

Day Shift Patient Ratio: 1 nurse per 4-5 patients (with flexibility based on acuity and staffing)

Certifications Required

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • TNCC
  • NIHSS
  • CPI/MOAB

Essential Skills

  • General ED experience, including cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • IV skills and knowledge of medication administration
  • Experience in procedural sedation and blood administration
  • Familiarity with cardiac medications and TNK administration (preferred)

Unit Support

  • ER Technician: Assists with glucose checks, iStat, and splinting
  • Charge Nurse: Rarely handles patient assignments
  • Resource/Float Nurse available
  • Respiratory Therapist: On-site 24/7
  • ED Educator present for ongoing support
  • Increased Security: Available 24/7 for safety
  • House Supervisor: On-site 24/7
  • Social Work Services: Assigned to the ED 24/7
  • Pharmacy Support: Available 24/7 for medication management

Charting System and Equipment

  • EHR: Epic
  • Medication Delivery: Alaris and Pyxis
  • Monitoring: Central and bedside telemetry

Orientation

  • Day 1: New Employee Orientation, Epic training (if needed), and mental health area introduction
  • Day 2: 12-hour shift with assigned preceptor
  • Traveler Telemetry Competency: Required prior to starting

Scheduling

  • Shift Options:
    • Day: 0700-1900
    • Night: 1900-0700
    • Mid:
      • 1100-2300 (day/mids)
      • 1500-0300 (mids/night)
  • Weekend Scheduling: Varies based on unit needs
  • Schedule Availability: Provided 3 weeks in advance
  • Time Off Requests: Approved by the Nurse Manager
