Unit Information
This facility operates 32 beds, with an average daily census of 90-110 patients.
Experience Requirements
- Traditional Traveler: Minimum of 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) experience.
- Critical Access Point (CAP): Minimum of 4 years of experience required.
- First-time travelers are not accepted.
Patient Types and Common Diagnoses
- General ED complaints
- Abdominal pain
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath (SOB)
- Behavioral health patients
- Geriatrics
- Rarely pediatrics
- Occasional labor and delivery (L&D) cases transferred to other facilities
Patient Ratios
- Registered Nurse (RN) Ratio: 1:4
- Patient Care Technician (PCT) Ratio: 1:6-12
Required Licenses and Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- MOAB 1 & 2 or CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
Skills Required
Candidates should possess strong general ED skills, along with soft skills including:
- Team player mentality

- Effective communication abilities
- Time management skills
Department Support
The department is supported by:
- Patient Care Technicians (PCT)
- Receptionist/HUC available 24/7
- Charge Nurse (does not take patients)
- Phlebotomy staff
- Respiratory Therapy (RT) available 24/7
- Hospitalist available 24/7
- ED doctors and mid-level providers
- Lab draws conducted by phlebotomists, nurses, and techs
Technology and Equipment
- EMR: EPIC
- IV Pump: Alaris
- Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
Orientation Process
The orientation includes:
- General hospital orientation
- 1-2 shifts on the unit followed by 2-3 shifts independently for adjustment
- For CAP, staff will work in the unit for 2-3 weeks to understand the workflow before being paired with a resident
Scheduling Information
- Weekend rotation: every other weekend
- Holiday expectations: as needed by the unit
- Request Time Off (RTO) approval: Up to 7 days, additional requests must be emailed to the Nurse Manager
- Shift times include: 0600-1830, 0900-2130, 1100-2330, 1200-0000, 1500-0330, and 1800-0630
- For CAP, preceptors will rotate through shifts, beginning with days and include night shifts for 4-6 weeks pending resident assignment
