Unit Information

Bed capacity varies by unit:

  • MSICU: 40 beds
  • CVICU: 10 beds
  • PCU: 40 beds
  • 2R PCU Obs: 18 beds (can expand to 27 during overflow)
  • CCU: 30 beds
  • Medical: 89 beds
  • Surgical: 55 beds
  • Flex Unit: 9 beds (includes PCU and MS patients)
  • Inpatient Rehab: 47 beds across two floors

Minimum Experience Requirements

  • ICU: Minimum of 2 years of ICU experience
  • PCU/PCU ER holds: Minimum of 2 years of PCU experience
  • Med-Surg: Minimum of 2 years in an acute care setting

Patient Types & Common Diagnoses

Responsibilities may vary based on the unit:

  • ICU: Patients with respiratory failure, GI bleeds, DKA, sepsis, CVA, complex post-operative cases, and higher-level therapies.
  • PCU: Patients with respiratory compromise, sepsis, renal failure, CHF, COPD, and general medical/surgical needs.
  • Med-Surg: Covers medical, surgical, oncology, and palliative care patients, including those with COVID-19.
  • Rehab: Focus on neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, and post-ICU recovery.
  • ED Holding: Fast-paced environment with mixed diagnoses, including ICU level patients.

Patient Ratios

  • ICU: 1:2 ratio based on acuity
  • PCU and CCU: 1:4 ratio
  • Medical and Surgical: 1:5 ratio
  • Rehab: 2:8 team model (RN, LPN, Tech)

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • ICU: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS
  • PCU: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS
  • Med-Surg: BLS, NIHSS

Required Skills

  • ICU: Cardiac rhythm interpretation, vent management, invasive line management
  • PCU: Cardiac rhythm interpretation, chest tubes, required IV medication titration
  • Med-Surg: Strong skills in IV management, PCAs, and chest tubes
  • Experience with EPIC electronic medical record system is required
  • Excellent communication and patient education skills are essential

Support within the Department

  • Tech Support:
    • ICU: 1 tech per 14 patients
    • PCU: 1 tech per 10 patients
    • Med-Surg: 1 tech per 8-10 patients
  • Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7
  • Hospitalist Services: Available 24/7
  • Intensivist Services: Available 24/7

Technology and Equipment

Orientation
