  • Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Rotation: Every other holiday, including the companion day for major holidays
  • Electronic Medical Record: EPIC
  • Floating: Travel nurses may float first to the ICU, another stepdown unit, or general medicine based on experience and patient-care needs

Cardiac Stepdown Travel RN Requirements

  • Active Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license, or confirmation that the Illinois RN license application process has been initiated
  • At least 1 year of recent ICU, intermediate care, progressive care, or stepdown nursing experience
  • Experience caring for patients with a 2:1 or 3:1 nurse-to-patient ratio; progressive care or telemetry experience alone is not sufficient
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification recommended
  • Demonstrated tracheostomy and mechanical ventilator experience
  • Experience with cardiac monitoring and titratable medication infusions
  • Ability to provide safe, independent nursing care for medically complex cardiac, medical, neurological, surgical, and trauma patients
  • Ability to work 12-hour night shifts, rotating weekends, and assigned holidays

Travel RN Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive nursing care to stepdown patients with complex medical, cardiac, neurological, surgical, and trauma conditions
  • Care for patients requiring tracheostomies, mechanical ventilation, BiPAP, CPAP, chest tubes, feeding tubes, central lines, PICC lines, and arterial lines
  • Monitor patients using bedside Philips monitors, interpret clinical findings, and confirm telemetry information in collaboration with telemetry technicians
  • Safely administer and titrate infusions such as Cardene, Cardizem, amiodarone, dobutamine, heparin, and low-dose or infrequently adjusted vasopressors according to orders and protocol
  • Recognize changes in patient condition and promptly communicate critical findings to providers and the interdisciplinary care team
  • Perform focused and comprehensive nursing assessments, develop individualized care plans, and evaluate patient progress
  • Collaborate with patient care technicians, charge nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare team members
  • Document assessments, interventions, medication administration, and outcomes accurately in EPIC
  • Support safe patient transitions, patient education, discharge planning, and continuity of care
  • Float to an appropriate level-of-care assignment as needed while maintaining patient safety and scope of practice
