  • Shift: 12-hour shifts, with day or night assignment based on unit needs; typical times are 7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m.
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday rotation, including the companion day for major holidays
  • Patient Assignment: Typically 3 patients per nurse
  • Charting: EPIC
  • Floating: May float first to other stepdown or general medical units; ICU floating may be available for nurses with extensive ICU experience

Cardiac Stepdown RN Job Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois, or confirmation that the Illinois RN license application process has been initiated
  • At least 1 year of recent ICU, progressive care, intermediate care, or cardiac stepdown nursing experience
  • Experience caring for a 2:1 or 3:1 nurse-to-patient ratio in a high-acuity setting; progressive care or telemetry-only experience is not sufficient
  • Recent experience caring for tracheostomy and ventilator patients
  • Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association
  • Ability to manage complex medical, neurological, surgical, trauma, and cardiac patients
  • Demonstrated competency with titratable intravenous medications and high-acuity cardiac and respiratory monitoring

Travel Registered Nurse Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for patients with cardiac, respiratory, neurological, medical, surgical, and trauma conditions
  • Manage patients with COPD, CHF, sepsis, renal failure, liver failure, pancreatitis, GI bleeding, DKA, stroke, seizures, complex pneumonia, and post-operative conditions
  • Care for patients with tracheostomies, ventilators, BiPAP, CPAP, chest tubes, G-tubes, NG tubes, PICC lines, central lines, and arterial lines
  • Titrate and monitor medications such as Cardene, Cardizem, amiodarone, dobutamine, heparin, and select low-dose vasopressors according to clinical protocols
  • Interpret patient assessments and confirm telemetry findings in collaboration with monitor technicians
  • Recognize changes in patient condition and promptly communicate concerns to the interdisciplinary care team
  • Maintain accurate documentation in EPIC and provide safe, patient-centered handoffs
  • Collaborate with patient care technicians, charge nurses, providers, and other members of the care team to support quality outcomes
  • Adapt to floating assignments while providing care appropriate to the assigned level of acuity
