Cardiac Stepdown Registered Nurse (RN) – 7-Week Travel Nursing Contract in Wausau, WI
Experienced Registered Nurses can join a high-acuity cardiac stepdown team in Wausau, Wisconsin, for a 7-week travel nursing assignment with competitive weekly pay and progressive care experience.
Provide exceptional nursing care for medically complex patients in a supportive cardiac stepdown and intermediate care setting. Travel Nursing Job Details

- Weekly Estimated Pay: $2,220–$2,340
- Contract Length: 7 weeks
- Start Date: October 12, 2026
- Shift: 12-hour variable day and night shifts, approximately 7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m.
- Guaranteed Hours: 24 hours per week, subject to orientation and holiday scheduling policies
- Weekend and Holiday Schedule: Every other weekend and every other holiday
- Orientation: 8 hours
- Patient Population: Progressive care patients requiring close monitoring, heavy telemetry, and complex nursing interventions
Cardiac Stepdown RN Job Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of recent Registered Nurse experience required
- Recent cardiac stepdown, intermediate care, progressive care, PCU, or telemetry nursing experience required
- At least 1 prior travel nursing assignment required
- Current Wisconsin Registered Nurse license
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Ventilator and tracheostomy care experience required
- ICU experience preferred
- Level II trauma experience preferred
- EPIC electronic medical record charting experience preferred
- Associate degree or nursing certificate required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
- Ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, and perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
Registered Nurse Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care for cardiac stepdown, telemetry, and intermediate care patients
- Continuously monitor cardiac telemetry and recognize changes in patient condition requiring timely intervention
- Care for patients with complex conditions, including sepsis, trauma, gastrointestinal bleeding, stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic trauma, and alcohol detoxification
- Manage patients with ventilators, tracheostomies, chest tubes, insulin infusions, colostomies, and ileostomies
- Deliver safe, individualized patient care while maintaining a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of approximately 4:1
- Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate treatment plans and promote positive patient outcomes
- Complete accurate and timely nursing documentation in the EPIC electronic medical record
- Float to other inpatient units, including higher-acuity areas, as needed
- Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans, medications, procedures, and discharge needs
- Support a culture of teamwork, resilience, accountability, and high-quality patient care
