Systems and Applications Operations Engineer Associate Salary: £27,254 to £29,064 per annum

Contract Type: Permanent

Hours/working pattern: Full Time 37 Hours

  • Salary: £27,254 to £29,064 per annum

Grade: F

Contract: Permanent

Hours: Full Time 37 Hours

Location: Northallerton, North Yorkshire

Weekend Working: Occasional out-of-hours working

About the Role:

If you enjoy helping people, solving problems, and keeping systems running reliably, this role offers the opportunity to do all three in a fast-paced operational environment.

This is a practical role supporting a range of business‑critical systems used across a wide network of offices by internal teams, external partners, and other organisations. You'll be part of an Operations Team that focuses on reliable service, responsive support, and continuous improvement, working closely with users, colleagues, and suppliers.

If you're looking for a role where customer service, technical problem‑solving, and teamwork all matter, this could be a good fit.

Role Summary:

As a Systems & Applications Operations Engineer Associate, you will provide second‑line operational support for key business systems used across the organisation. Your role is to keep systems reliable, well‑supported, and improving over time, ensuring users receive a professional, responsive service.

You'll work closely with:

  • End users and business stakeholders
  • Third‑party suppliers
  • Experienced system specialists within TSAT

The role balances support, change, and improvement, not just firefighting.

What the Role Is Really About

In practice, this role involves:

  • Acting as second‑line support for nominated systems, resolving incidents and service requests efficiently
  • Maintaining clear, professional communication with users during issues and changes
  • Working with suppliers to resolve more complex or deep‑rooted problems
  • Supporting system upgrades, patches, and new functionality, including testing
  • Spotting opportunities to improve system performance, usability, or support processes
  • Gradually developing from competent user towards system expert, supported by the team

What "Good" Looks Like in This Role

A strong associate in this role:

  • Takes ownership of issues through to resolution
  • Communicates clearly and calmly, especially when systems aren't working
  • Understands that great IT support is as much about people as technology
  • Is curious about how systems work and how they could work better
  • Balances following process with using professional judgement
  • Works well independently but knows when to escalate appropriately

Skills and Experience That Matter Most

The role values practical capability and attitude over heavy specialism:

  • Experience using IT systems in a support or operational context
  • Evidence of strong customer service and relationship‑building skills
  • Confidence working with users who are not technically trained
  • An interest in problem‑solving and improving how systems perform
  • Willingness to learn and develop towards expert system knowledge

Working Environment and Expectations

  • Hybrid and flexible working supported
  • Supportive team culture with strong on‑the‑job learning
  • Occasional out‑of‑hours work for system changes or upgrades
  • Occasional travel to other sites or supplier events

You're joining a team that values professionalism, strong teamwork, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

What This Role Is Not

  • Not a first‑line service desk role
  •  Not purely reactive support
  • Not isolated technical work without user interaction

What we can offer

The service has embraced modern work practices, enabling colleagues to work from home, other offices and client premises. We come together as a team for development, connection and collaboration, otherwise we work where it's most productive to do so.

You will be provided with technology to enable efficient and effective work, ensuring that you are connected and well supported.

You will have the full support of the service to enable you to develop both knowledge and skills to help further progress your career.

You are provided with a comprehensive benefits package offering:

  • An excellent employer defined benefits pension scheme (LGPS)
  • Generous holiday allowance
  • Flexible working to help you thrive at home and well as work
  • Salary sacrifice schemes such as car, cycle and technology
  • Childcare schemes
  • Package of 'Everybody Benefits' shopping vouchers, discounts and more

Please see our total rewards brochure for more information.

The role offers Hybrid Working, with expectation to attend council offices across North Yorkshire when required.

Location

We have a range of offices across North Yorkshire, these can offer benefits such as onsite parking, easy transport links and on-site canteen facilities depending on the location. These offer great opportunities to meet with the wider technology team and build a strong support and social network.
