BARGAINING UNIT POSITION DESCRIPTION STAFF ATTORNEY Mission and Vision: The mission of the Legal Aid Society (LAS) is to pursue justice for people in poverty. LAS exists to serve the diverse Kentucky communities in which our clients reside - seeking to advocate for justice, remove barriers to access the justice system, and partner with the most disinvested in our community. Justice for all is our vision and the center of all we do. Location: The Legal Aid Society serves fifteen Kentucky counties: Breckinridge, Bullitt, Grayson, Hardin, Henry, Jefferson, Larue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble and Washington. Services: LAS staff serve the fifteen-county region providing a full array of free civil legal services, which address critical civil legal needs related to our clients’ safety, stability, opportunity, and health. Purpose of Job: To provide uniform, high quality advocacy for low-income clients in all forums, including the courts, administrative agencies, and community engagement initiatives. Work Environment: Work performed in the community, office, and remotely, depending upon the tasks of the job, needs of the agency, and the needs of the client community we serve. Reports to Advocacy Director or designated Managing Attorney. Essential Job Functions: 1. Work with supervisor to develop plan for advocacy that balances impact work, service work, community engagement, and outreach. 2. Work with supervisor to identify individual training needs and develop strategies with case supervisor to address those needs. 3. Interact with clients, staff, and service providers professionally and appropriately. Establish and maintain rapport with clients to obtain accurate information and to establish trust. Work with other staff in a collegial and cooperative nature. Develop and nurture good relations with service providers who make referrals or otherwise coordinate with the program. 4. Attend and actively participate in planning meetings, trainings, task forces, and other meetings. 5. Provide legal representation through the policies and practices consistent with professional standards for the delivery of civil legal services to the poor and consistent with program policies and priorities. 6. Maintain accurate and complete files or records. Prepare reports and timely complete forms and records necessary for client services or administrative tasks related to job. 7. Occasional night and weekend work hours; some local and out of town travel. Qualifications: 1. Demonstrable commitment to understanding and addressing issues of low-income people. 2. Ability to relate well, respect, connect, and develop rapport with low-income people and community groups. 3. J.D. and be admitted to practice in Kentucky and in good standing or must be eligible for admission to the Kentucky Bar through practice in another state. 4. Ability to use office technologies, including case management software. 5. Must be able to balance administrative and client advocacy responsibilities. 6. Compensation is commensurate with years of experience, based on a salary scale and benefits governed by our Collective Bargaining Agreement. The salary scale for this position is $58,656 - $70,250.
