Shop Tech - Mechanical Assembly

Position Summary:

Under the direction of Shop Leadership, the Shop Technician supports the mechanical assembly, fabrication, modification, and repair of low-voltage switchboards and medium-voltage switchgear.

This is a hands-on shop position requiring strong mechanical aptitude and regular use of hand, power, and shop tools. The ideal candidate has experience in mechanical assembly, manufacturing, fabrication, construction, automotive, industrial equipment, or another skilled trade where assembling, disassembling, modifying, and repairing equipment is a regular part of the job.

Electrical experience is beneficial, but strong mechanical skills, hands-on assembly experience, and proficiency with tools are the primary focus of this position.

Responsibilities

• Perform mechanical assembly, disassembly, modification, and repair of low-voltage switchboards and medium-voltage switchgear.
• Read and follow work orders, specifications, mechanical drawings, prints, and assembly instructions.
• Inspect incoming equipment and components for mechanical defects, damage, missing parts, or other issues.
• Assemble and install equipment components, hardware, brackets, panels, bus supports, enclosures, and related assemblies.
• Accurately measure, mark, drill, tap, cut, grind, fasten, and modify components as required.
• Use hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, drills, saws, grinders, torque tools, and other shop equipment safely and effectively.
• Perform equipment teardown and rebuild activities as assigned.
• Support fabrication and modification of metal components and equipment enclosures.
• Make mechanical adjustments to ensure proper fit, alignment, clearance, and operation.
• Assist with retrofit and modernization projects involving existing electrical distribution equipment.
• Perform basic electrical assembly or wiring tasks as trained and assigned.
• Assist with troubleshooting and repair of equipment under the guidance of experienced team members and Shop Leadership.
• Perform quality checks throughout the assembly process and verify completed work meets RESA Power and customer requirements.
• Document completed work accurately and communicate issues, missing materials, or discrepancies to Shop Leadership.
• Safely use material-handling equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks when trained and authorized.
• Assist with loading, unloading, staging, moving, palletizing, and preparing equipment for shipment.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
• Work cooperatively with other technicians, departments, and leadership to complete customer orders accurately and on schedule.
• Follow all company, local, state, and federal safety requirements and RESA Power policies and procedures.
• Support continuous-improvement efforts to improve quality, efficiency, and turnaround times.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Experience and Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 1 year of hands-on mechanical, assembly, manufacturing, fabrication, construction, automotive, industrial equipment, maintenance, or related skilled-trade experience.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and ability to assemble, disassemble, modify, and repair equipment or mechanical components.
• Experience using a variety of hand and power tools in a professional work environment.
• Comfortable performing tasks such as measuring, drilling, tapping, cutting, grinding, fastening, torquing, and mechanical assembly.
• Ability to read and follow work orders, specifications, drawings, prints, or assembly instructions.
• Ability to troubleshoot mechanical fitment, alignment, assembly, and equipment issues.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
• Ability to work independently after receiving instruction and effectively contribute within a team.
• Ability to prioritize work, follow instructions, meet deadlines, and manage multiple assignments.
• Basic computer skills for data entry, accessing work information, and completing documentation.
• Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, leadership, and other departments.
• Knowledge of workplace safety practices and willingness to follow all required PPE and safety procedures.
• Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and perform work requiring standing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and working with tools for extended periods.

• Switchboard or switchgear assembly
• Electrical panel or enclosure assembly
• Drill and tap work
• Torque tools
• Forklift or material-handling equipment

Experience working with low-voltage switchboards, medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, bus assemblies, electrical enclosures, or other power-distribution equipment is a plus, but not required.

Electrical experience, including basic wiring, schematics, or electrical equipment familiarity, is also a plus.

Additional Information

Travel: 0-5%

Compensation: $22 per hour. Full benefits include medical, dental, vision, company-paid life insurance, matching 401(k), and paid time off for non-union roles.

Physical Demands: Regular lifting and/or moving of up to 50 pounds, along with standing for extended periods, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and working in industrial/shop conditions.
