Senior Director of Digital Commerce & Marketing Engineering Job Summary
We are seeking a highly technical, visionary
Senior Director of Digital Commerce & Marketing Engineering to lead the architecture, engineering, scalability, and performance of our global
digital commerce ecosystem. In this role, you will bridge the gap between complex software
engineering, modern marketing technology, and commercial business outcomes. You will own
the technical roadmap, leading a high-performing team of engineers and architects to build
secure, high-availability, and lightning-fast digital storefronts.
The ideal candidate has deep roots in distributed systems, modern software engineering, and
headless/composable architecture, with specific expertise in both enterprise B2B wholesale
platforms, and highly scalable, multi-tenant B2C/B2B storefronts for independent dealer
ecosystems.
Key Responsibilities Architecture & Engineering Leadership- Technical Roadmap: Define and execute the technical architecture strategy for our global ecosystem, driving the evolution from legacy setups to modern architectural paradigms (e.g., MACH Microservices, API-first, Cloud-native, Headless).
- Multi-Tenant B2C Storefront Network: Architect and scale the foundational multi-tenant B2C platform infrastructure that powers our independent dealers' customer-facing websites, ensuring strict data isolation, white-label configurations, and sub-second page-load performance across thousands of distributed endpoints.
- Core B2B & Commerce Integrations: Oversee the development of robust, secure APIs and middleware connecting the core B2B wholesale platform to critical enterprise backend systems (ERP , Order Management Systems/OMS, PIM, and CRM) to handle complex dealer interactions, customer pricing and promotions, and real-time fulfillment data.
Modern eCom & Marketing Integrations- Visual CMS & Composable Strategy: Architect and manage integrations with modern Marketing Technology (MarTech) platforms, with a focus on Visual CMS and page-building engines (Builder.io) and Customer Data Platforms (CDPs like Segment).
- Component Governance & Direct Marketing Enablement: Establish the engineering workflows to register, manage, and scale reusable frontend code components into our Visual CMS. This will enable non-technical marketing teams to autonomously build out dynamic web experiences without risking platform degradation.
- Personalization & Analytics Engines: Implement and scale real-time personalization, A/B testing & feature flagging (e.g., Launch Darkly), and search/merchandising engines (e.g., GroupBy, Algolia) directly into the storefront engineering pipeline.
- AdTech & Tracking Pipelines: Own the technical implementation of server-side tracking (e.g., Conversions API / CAPI) and data privacy-compliant tag management to support performance marketing and attribution.
Innovation & Technical Execution- CI/CD & DevOps: Establish rigorous engineering standards, automated testing pipelines, and modern deployment practices to maximize release velocity while maintaining a zero-downtime deployment philosophy.
- Data & Event-Driven Infrastructure: Partner with data engineering teams to design event-driven architectures (using webhooks, message and event brokers) that pipe real-time transactional and behavioral data into cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake) for instant analysis.
- Security & Compliance: Ensure the entire digital footprint adheres to global security standards, data privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), and strict PCI-DSS compliance.
- Comprehensive QA Automation: Establish a next-generation automated testing strategy encompassing unit, integration, and E2E frameworks (e.g., Playwright). Implement automated API contract testing and visual regression testing to safely manage dynamic page layouts generated via Builder.io.
- Ecosystem Observability: Work with technology and business teams to ensure all components of the digital ecosystem are observable in centralized observability platform (i.e. Datadog) and are providing meaningful actionable insights for proactive performance optimization, scalability, issue resolution and escalation, customer service, and executive-level decision making.
Vendor & Team Governance- Hybrid Engineering Organization: Build, mentor, and manage a top-tier hybrid engineering organization, strategically combining internal full-time talent with external third-party resources, including System Integrators (SIs), specialized development houses, and external QA execution firms.
- Vendor Governance & Delivery Oversight: Define the delivery standards, KPIs, and code-review guardrails for external technical partners to ensure that deliverables from SIs and development firms seamlessly integrate into the main codebase without accruing technical debt.
- Buy vs. Build Strategy: Evaluate third-party SaaS vendors, system integrators, and open-source tools to make calculated technical investment decisions.
- Budget Management: Own the infrastructure and technical licensing budget, optimizing cloud spend (AWS, GCP , Azure) and API consumption costs.
Qualifications & Tech Stack Education & Experience- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a heavily technical field.
- Experience: 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years leading technical teams and architects specifically within large-scale, multi-storefront eCommerce and MarTech environments.
- Proven Track Record: Experience scaling an enterprise eCommerce platform to millions of monthly active users and handling high-concurrency transactional volume, and orchestrating massive syndicated product catalogs.
Technical Skills- Modern Commerce & Visual CMS: Deep experience with headless commerce providers (e.g., commercetools, Shopify Custom Storefronts, Elastic Path) and composable, visual-first content management solutions (Builder.io, Contentful, or similar).
- Backend & Integration Stack: Proficiency in microservices design patterns, API Management, event-driven architecture (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS EventBridge, Azure Event Hubs), and modern languages such as C#, .NET Core, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Python. Solid understanding of modern integration Platform-as-a-Service (iPaas) solutions.
- Frontend Infrastructure: Mastery of modern web performance concepts, Core Web Vitals optimization, SSR/SSG frameworks (e.g., Next.js, Nuxt), and Edge computing/CDNs (e.g., Cloudflare Workers, Fastly VCL).
- MarTech Ecosystem: Hands-on architectural familiarity with CDPs, server-side tracking, identity resolution, and marketing automation integrations.
- Cloud Infrastructure: Expertise in cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) and multi-cloud ecosystems, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
- DevOps: Strong understanding of DevOps principles, CI/CD tools, and infrastructure automation. Proven leadership in TDD, QA automation, and modern software engineering practices. Expert competency with SOA, EDA, and RESTful API development and design
- Communication: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders in both written and verbal formats.
