About the role

We're hiring a Sales Engineer, Optics and Vision Systems for a growing precision optics company in San Diego, California. You'll work the technical sales cycle from initial outreach to design-in and production. You'll serve as a technical advisor, prospector, and account owner to engineering teams building embedded vision systems for robotics, autonomous vehicles, and industrial automation.

What you'll do

  • Prospect and qualify new OEM accounts in high-growth markets.

  • Field inbound inquiries and manage a portfolio of existing accounts.

  • Gather technical requirements (resolution, field of view, environmental durability) and recommend lens and camera solutions.

  • Partner with internal engineering to scope custom lens solutions when existing products don't fit customer requirements.

  • Support multi-stakeholder sales cycles with engineering, program, and procurement teams from early discovery through design-in and production.

  • Prepare quotes, manage proposals and orders, and track your pipeline in a CRM (HubSpot).

  • Visit customers on site and represent the company at trade shows (such as Photonics West, Xponential, and Automate).

What you bring

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Robotics Engineering.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs to engineers, program managers, and buyers.

  • Consultative mindset: you dig into the customer's technical problem rather than pitching.

  • Self-sufficient and organized. You manage your own pipeline and follow through without oversight.

  • Comfortable prospecting new accounts through cold outreach.

  • Energized by a fast-paced, small-team environment.

  • Based in San Diego and available on-site Monday to Friday, with up to 15 to 25% travel.

Preferred Experience

  • 1+ years of experience in applications engineering or another technical, customer-facing role for engineered hardware or physical products.
  • Background in optics, optical design, or digital imaging systems.
  • Experience in technical sales or technical project management.
  • Experience with Hubspot as a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool.

Compensation

The expected base range for this role is $75,000 – $95,000 per year, based on experience, qualifications, and job-related factors. Final compensation will be determined during the selection process and may vary accordingly.

Additionally, you will be eligible for a performance bonus on managed accounts and a commission on new business you win, so your earnings grow with your results.

Benefits and Perks

  • Company-sponsored medical, dental, and vision plans

  • Health Savings Account (HSA)

  • Life insurance

  • 401(k) with up to a 4% company match

  • Paid company holidays, vacation time (PTO), and paid sick time

  • On-site gym and golf simulator
