Job Description

The City of Raleigh is seeking part-time Park Specialists to perform a variety of tasks to support patrons, facilities, and outdoor recreation at Lake Johnson Park and Thomas G Crowder Woodland Center. This part-time position is responsible for providing outstanding customer service, assisting in park operations, and facilitating park programs, registrations, and private rentals. Successful candidates will work with both the public while incorporating outdoor ethical practices through park operations, facility oversight, and programmatic opportunities. This position typically works 2 to 4 six-hour shifts per week. Availability to work afternoons and weekends is encouraged.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform facility opening, closing, and upkeep procedures
  • Greeting patrons and answer general park, rental, and program questions
  • Servicing of park assets such as conference rooms, restrooms, and workspaces periodically throughout shifts.
  • Safely set up classroom tables and chairs, including folding, unfolding, and moving them to other rooms within the facility
  • Monitor the park and facilities for the safety and comfort of visitors
  • Assist visitors with registration software, properly collecting fees in accordance with cash handling policies and procedures
  • Assist staff with program, rental, and operational related projects.
  • Operate Park vehicles, including a John Deere gator, park trucks, and patrol boats
  • Walking the greenway and park trails for patron safety and cleanup when staffing allows

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge:

  • Risk management practice in outdoor recreation venues
  • The values and principles of outdoor recreation and environmental education
  • Proper techniques, rules, and etiquette for various outdoor recreational and environmental educational activities

Skills:

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • The ability to reprioritize task periodically.

Abilities:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Lift up to 50 pounds independently
  • Current valid Driver's License or able to obtain City of Raleigh Drivers Permit
  • Work in an outdoor environment, including various weather conditions independently

Working Conditions:

The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. No effective protection from weather, activities occur outside. The worker is subject to noise.
