Job description:
 
The Client’s Energy VPP Operations Specialist is responsible for the day to day operational execution
of Client’s Energy’s Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and utility demand response programs. This role ensures that deployed battery enabled HVAC assets are properly onboarded, monitored, dispatched, and operated in compliance with utility, ISO/RTO, and internal operational requirements.
The VPP Operations Specialist serves as a front line operational role within the VPP Operations function, translating program requirements, operating procedures, and dispatch instructions into reliable real time execution. The role works cross functionally with Asset Maintenance, Engineering, Digital, Program Management, and Utility partners to ensure safe, compliant, and high performing VPP operations.
This position is critical to ensuring Client’s Energy’s VPP offerings operate reliably at scale and deliver consistent value to customers, utilities, and grid partners.
 
Key Responsibilities:
•Execute day to day VPP operations across deployed battery and HVAC integrated assets.
•Validate asset onboarding, activation, and readiness for participation in utility and grid services programs.
•Monitor real time system dashboards, telemetry, battery health, and HVAC coordination to ensure proper operation.
•Execute dispatch instructions in response to utility, ISO, or aggregator signals (e.G., OpenADR, API based events).
•Submit and manage demand response and grid services nominations in accordance with program schedules and requirements.
•Track event participation, response performance, and operational outcomes.
•Identify, triage, and resolve operational alarms or anomalies;perform Level 1 diagnostics and escalate issues as needed.
•Coordinate with Asset Maintenance and Field Operations to resolve site level issues and support corrective actions.
•Maintain accurate operational logs, event records, and performance documentation.
•Support internal and external reporting, settlement validation, audits, and continuous improvement efforts.
•Contribute to the refinement and continuous improvement of VPP Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
 
Level of Responsibility:
•Operates independently within established operating procedures, playbooks, and escalation frameworks.
•Problems faced are technical and operational in nature and require investigation, analysis, and sound judgment, particularly during live grid events.
•Communicates operational status, risks, and issues to cross functional stakeholders and leadership as needed.
•Supports business objectives by ensuring reliable execution, compliance, and operational readiness of VPP programs.
 
Required Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related technical field and 5+ years of relevant experience;
or
•Advanced degree in a related field with 3+ years of relevant experience.
•Ability to travel up to 20% domestically.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
•Experience with Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), demand response programs, or distributed energy resources (DER).
•Familiarity with HVAC systems, battery storage, or energy management platforms.
•Experience working with utility programs, grid operations, telemetry, or settlement processes.
•Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities in dynamic operational environments.
•Ability to work effectively in cross functional teams and follow clearly defined operational governance models.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
