Mechanical Engineer – Structural & Sheet Metal Design

Tulsa, OK | Full-Time | Monday–Friday | Primarily On-Site with Remote Flexibility

$100,000–$150,000, depending on experience

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.

Design It. Calculate It. See It Built.

We're partnering with an established industrial manufacturer seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design custom industrial equipment, structural assemblies, sheet metal components, and fabricated systems.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys taking a design from concept and engineering calculations through fabrication and production. You'll work closely with manufacturing and fabrication teams to develop equipment and structures that are not only structurally sound, but practical to build.

The ideal candidate has experience with structural steel, sheet metal, fabricated equipment, equipment supports, frames, skids, platforms, or similar industrial applications.

A PE license is not required at the time of hire, but candidates must have the education and professional experience necessary to pursue PE licensure in the future.

What You'll Do

Mechanical & Structural Design

  • Design custom industrial equipment, frames, supports, platforms, enclosures, and fabricated assemblies.

  • Design with structural steel, sheet metal, and other fabricated materials.

  • Develop 3D models, engineering drawings, and fabrication documentation.

  • Select appropriate materials, structural members, fasteners, welds, hardware, and components.

  • Account for equipment loads, mounting requirements, lifting, transportation, and operating conditions.

  • Evaluate how individual components and assemblies work together within the overall equipment design.

  • Maintain accurate models, drawings, BOMs, and engineering documentation.

Engineering Calculations & Analysis

  • Perform engineering and structural calculations to validate equipment and fabricated structures.

  • Evaluate applicable wind, snow, rain, dead, live, equipment, lifting, transportation, and operating loads.

  • Determine appropriate material thicknesses, structural members, connections, and support arrangements.

  • Evaluate frames, skids, platforms, equipment supports, mounting points, and similar structures.

  • Identify potential design issues and apply sound engineering judgment before designs reach production.

  • Use appropriate engineering and analysis tools to validate designs.

  • Document calculations and engineering decisions supporting the final design.

CAD & Engineering Documentation

  • Create detailed 3D CAD models and production-ready engineering drawings.

  • Develop drawings communicating dimensions, materials, tolerances, weld requirements, and fabrication details.

  • Produce documentation suitable for structural steel, sheet metal, welding, machining, and assembly.

  • Use CAD and engineering software to support mechanical and structural design.

  • Experience with AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, Advance Steel, or similar software is valuable.

  • Maintain accurate revisions, drawings, models, BOMs, and engineering records.

Manufacturing & Fabrication Support

  • Work directly with manufacturing and fabrication teams throughout the design process.

  • Apply design-for-manufacturing principles to create practical, buildable designs.

  • Consider welding, forming, press brakes, cutting, machining, and other fabrication processes when developing designs.

  • Provide engineering support when production encounters design or fabrication challenges.

  • Recommend design changes that improve manufacturability, quality, cost, and efficiency.

  • Support projects from engineering through fabrication, assembly, testing, and completion.

Cross-Functional Engineering

  • Work with Engineering, Project Management, Purchasing, Manufacturing, and other teams throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Translate customer requirements and project specifications into practical engineering solutions.

  • Communicate technical requirements clearly to engineering and manufacturing personnel.

  • Support engineering changes and revisions as project requirements evolve.

  • Provide technical input related to quality, cost, schedule, manufacturability, and performance.

  • Take ownership of assigned engineering projects and drive designs through completion.

Codes & Engineering Standards

  • Apply applicable engineering, structural, fabrication, and safety standards to designs.

  • Develop designs that meet customer requirements and project specifications.

  • Familiarity with IBC, AISC, AWS, OSHA, or similar standards is beneficial.

  • Review designs for structural integrity, safety, and manufacturability before release.

  • Maintain supporting calculations and engineering documentation.

  • Stay current with applicable engineering standards and requirements.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.

  • Professional experience designing mechanical equipment, fabricated structures, structural assemblies, or industrial products.

  • Experience with structural steel, sheet metal, fabricated equipment, or similar materials/applications.

  • Strong understanding of engineering calculations and structural loading.

  • Ability to develop and interpret detailed engineering and fabrication drawings.

  • Strong engineering judgment and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with manufacturing, fabrication, and cross-functional teams.

  • Eligible to pursue a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the future.

Experience That Can Translate Well

We're open to engineers coming from a variety of backgrounds, including:

  • Structural steel design

  • Industrial equipment design

  • Custom machinery

  • Heavy manufacturing

  • Metal fabrication

  • Equipment frames and supports

  • Industrial skids

  • Platforms and structural assemblies

  • Sheet metal equipment and enclosures

  • Process equipment

  • Engineered-to-order manufacturing

  • Industrial facilities or infrastructure

You do not need to have worked in this exact industry. We're most interested in engineers who understand how to design structures or equipment that can withstand real-world loads and can work effectively with the people who build them.

PE Pathway

An active PE license is not required for this position.

The ideal candidate will have an engineering degree and professional experience that makes them eligible to pursue PE licensure in the future.

A current PE license is a plus, but it is not a requirement for consideration.

Why This Role

  • Design real industrial equipment and structures that move from your drawings into production.

  • Work directly with engineers, fabricators, welders, machinists, and manufacturing teams.

  • Take ownership of projects from concept through fabrication and completion.

  • Apply engineering calculations to practical, real-world design challenges.

  • Work with structural steel, sheet metal, fabricated assemblies, and custom equipment.

  • Have the opportunity to grow technically and pursue PE licensure.

  • Join an established organization offering long-term career growth.

Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based with regular interaction throughout an active manufacturing facility. You'll work closely with engineering, fabrication, production, and operations teams while supporting projects from design through fabrication and assembly.

PPE is required when entering designated production areas. The manufacturing environment includes typical industrial conditions such as machinery, welding and fabrication activities, elevated noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
