OrthoVirginia is seeking an Operatory Surgical Charge Capture Specialist who understands what happens during a surgical case—from the procedure performed to the implants, instruments, and supplies used—and can translate that activity into accurate charges, coding, and reimbursement.

This is not a traditional medical coding role. The ideal candidate brings hands-on knowledge of the orthopedic surgical environment along with coding expertise. You’ll work across our Operatory, Materials Management, clinical, and revenue cycle teams to ensure surgical cases are accurately documented, coded, and billed.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with asurgical operations background who has expanded their experience into materials management, implant coordination, charge capture, or surgical billing.

MUST HAVE ORTHOPEDIC EXPERIENCE

Position Summary 

We are seeking a detail-oriented and clinically knowledgeable Operatory Surgical Coding Specialist to join our Operatory team. In this role, you will ensure accurate posting of surgical cases, proper billing of supplies and implants, and correct CPT/HCPCS coding in collaboration with surgeons, clinical staff, and the Operatory Director. 
 

This position plays a critical role in optimizing reimbursement, preventing charge leakage, maintaining compliance, and ensuring accurate documentation for all office-based surgical procedures. 
 

The ideal candidate combines clinical knowledge with strong billing and coding expertise to ensure every procedure, supply, and implant is documented, coded, and billed accurately, supporting both compliance and financial performance. 

What You’ll Do

• Surgical Case Review & Charge Capture

• Review completed surgical cases to ensure procedures, supplies, and implants are accurately captured.

• Review operative documentation and apply appropriate CPT, HCPCS, and modifier coding.

• Partner with surgeons and clinical teams to clarify procedures performed and resolve missing or conflicting documentation.

• Confirm surgical assistant and other applicable billing requirements.

• Identify and resolve discrepancies before claims move forward.

Implants, Supplies & Materials

• Reconcile surgical documentation with cut sheets, purchase orders, bill-only documentation, and operative records.

• Verify implants and surgical supplies used during procedures for accurate charge capture.

• Partner with Materials Management and clinical teams to reconcile inventory and implant usage.

• Support implant, consignment, and bill-only workflows.

• Identify missing charges that could result in reimbursement loss.

Revenue Accuracy & Compliance

• Audit surgical cases for documentation, coding, and charge accuracy.

• Help prevent charge leakage by ensuring procedures, supplies, and implants are captured appropriately.

• Maintain compliance with applicable coding, billing, and documentation requirements.

• Maintain accurate and timely information within the EHR and inventory management systems.

• Collaborate across Operatory, Materials Management, and Revenue Cycle to resolve discrepancies and improve processes.

You understand the flow of a surgical case and are comfortable with surgical terminology, procedures, instrumentation, implants, and supplies. You also understand how that clinical information translates into accurate coding, charges, and reimbursement.

You bring strong attention to detail, enjoy solving discrepancies, and can work effectively with surgeons, clinical teams, Materials Management, and Revenue Cycle.

Qualifications

Required:

• Previous orthopedic experience

• Experience working in a surgical environment, such as an ASC, hospital OR, or office-based operatory

• Strong understanding of surgical workflows, instrumentation, implants, and supplies

• CPC, CCS-P, CRC, or similar coding credential

• Working knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and modifier coding

• Experience working within an electronic health record (EHR) system

• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills

• High level of accuracy and attention to detail

• Strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred:

• Previous Surgical Technologist/CST or other direct OR clinical experience

• Surgical charge capture or surgical billing experience

• Materials Management or implant coordination experience

• Experience with implant tracking, consignment inventory, and bill-only workflows

• Revenue integrity or reimbursement experience

• Epic experience
