Job Summary

The Division of Social Services is filling vacancies for Family Services Specialist 1, Underfilling a Family Services Specialist 2 in Ely, NV.

Family Services Specialists interview applicants and recipients of public assistance; explain eligibility; and elicit information to determine which public assistance programs are applicable. Assist clients in completing applications, research and verify information provided by clients by contacting landlords, employers, utility companies and personal creditors in order to confirm citizenship, residency, household composition, earnings, and projected household expenses, to process information to establish eligibility; compute income and evaluate other factors impacting benefits; make determinations according to timeframes and program regulations. This is the entry level in the series which provides for progression to the journey level upon satisfactory completion of the training period, successfully meeting minimum qualifications, and recommendation of the appointing authority. DSS uses intermittent positions to supplement full-time staff. DSS intermittent positions are full-time positions with a regular work schedule but have different layoff rights than permanent positions. DSS moves intermittent positions to permanent positions based on attrition and seniority.

  • In accordance with NRS 293.5045, a voter registration agency shall not knowingly employ a person whose duties will include the registration of voters if they have been convicted of a felony involving theft or fraud. Most positions in this series fall under this NRS*

Must type a minimum of 35 wpm accurately. A typing certificate issued within the last twelve (12) months must accompany you at your interview and verify your net typing speed of at least 35 wpm in a five minute test.

Essential Qualifications

One or more years of applicable experience as described in the job duties and graduation from high school or equivalent education.

Job Duties

  • Assist clients in competing required applications, declarations, forms, reviewing information for accuracy and consistency, and conferring with others.
  • Interview clients, explain conditions, and elicit information.
  • Interview clients to assess their vocational potential and available employment options.
  • Research, verify, and evaluate information to establish eligibility.
  • Perform income computation and other factors impacting the level of benefits.
  • Identify existing job skills, work experience, and immediate employment barriers.
  • Explain program objectives, requirements, and services and respond to client questions.
  • Develop a personal responsibility plan and design an individualized job training plan.
  • Coordinate services through community providers and other agency personnel.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Functions and operations of an administrative office; recordkeeping; interviewing practices; social service programs and their purpose; rights to privacy and confidentiality of information.

Skill in:

  • Mathematical computations.
  • Interpersonal and communication, both verbal and written.
  • Use and operation of office and job-related equipment and software.

Ability to:

  • Read and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; learn federal, State, and local resources serving the needs of applicants; maintain confidentiality of client records; receive inquiries and provide information; verify information from a variety of sources; compile information and prepare reports.
  • Store, record, and retrieve information; establish and maintain accurate records; interact effectively with individuals from varying social, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
