Estimator

SUMMARY

The Estimator supports all efforts performed by the preconstruction department with a focus on estimating the cost of projects and the pursuit of new projects, including the regular use of Building Information Modeling software, performing quantity takeoffs, preparation of both conceptual and detailed estimates, value engineering studies, development of logistics plans, frequent engagement with subcontractors, and the preparation of graphics for presentations and proposals.

ESTIMATOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop estimates and other preconstruction deliverables for a project under the supervision of others. • Review all specifications, drawings, and other project documents and determine how they affect the scope, cost, and schedule of a project. • Provide input on the development of detailed qualifications for the project. • Execute work using BIM software programs for purposes including quantity takeoffs, visualizations, logistics studies, and the export of graphic collateral. • Review and incorporate historical data from purchase orders, subcontracts, and other available sources of cost information into the estimates. • Develop skills to understand and generate breakdown and verification of expected costs through multiple analyses of costs, ultimately down to the components of labor, materials, equipment, subcontracted costs, and markups for any trade. • Identify and track long-lead-time equipment and materials. • Perform and communicate updates to the procurement plan as necessary. • Assist in studies of alternative options throughout the design process to support Target Value Design preconstruction services. • Under the supervision of others, assist conceptual and detailed estimating on projects. • Work with subcontractors to support the budgeting effort. • Solicit budget pricing and bid proposals from subcontractors and engage in discussion on value engineering, constructability, schedule, etc. • Support the preparation of proposals for new work, which may include the creation of BIM study models and/or conceptual estimates, contribution of graphic content such as logistics diagrams or sequencing studies, and written content as required. • Perform research aimed at discovering new methods for resolving design and process problems of previous solutions and incorporating improvements into new and current solutions. • This includes exploring various means, methods, and construction techniques to improve the overall construction process and increase efficiencies. • Translate research findings or other knowledge into design for a customer solution, including conducting detailed development work to resolve issues that could impact stability, safety, and serviceability.

ESTIMATOR QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to read and interpret drawings and technical data. Computer knowledge and efficiency, advanced skills in BIM software, especially Autodesk Revit, are preferred. Strong work ethic and dependability. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Excellent math skills. Ability to adhere to deadlines and balance multiple priorities, multitask. Detail-oriented mentality. Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality at all times.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Architecture, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Minimum 3 years of experience in general contracting or estimating, or 8 years of experience in the construction industry. Operations and field experience are a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Position is performed in an office or jobsite terrain environment. Position may require traversing irregular or uneven terrain to access jobsite offices. Personnel must have the ability to lift and carry small packages and material items in their work.
