Entry Level Industrial Maintenance Technician

The Entry Level Industrial Maintenance Technician supports the Operations Maintenance team by learning to install, maintain, and repair material handling and automated equipment in a high‑volume distribution environment. This role is designed for individuals with strong mechanical aptitude who want to build skills in troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and basic electrical work while supporting safe and reliable facility operations.

Technicians receive hands‑on training, work alongside experienced team members, and gradually take on more complex tasks as they develop.

Responsibilities
  • Promote a safe working environment by following all safety procedures and modeling safe behaviors.
  • Perform basic scheduled preventive maintenance on material handling equipment and pneumatic systems.
  • Assist with troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues on conveyors, motors, belts, sensors, and related components.
  • Support installation, maintenance, and repair of automated conveyor systems, packaging equipment, and distribution technologies.
  • Learn and perform predictive maintenance tasks under guidance from experienced technicians.
  • Use a CMMS to complete work orders and document maintenance activities.
  • Help track and organize spare parts, tools, and materials to support maintenance operations.
  • Work collaboratively with operations and maintenance teams to resolve equipment issues.
  • Receive mentoring from experienced technicians and apply best practices in safe work methods and equipment care.
  • Read and interpret basic blueprints, diagrams, and electrical schematics with support as needed.
  • Apply introductory electrical and electronic principles to troubleshoot basic input/output functions.
  • Follow Material Handling Equipment safety standards based on OEM and internal guidelines.
  • Participate in small projects and continuous improvement activities as assigned.
  • Safely use hand tools and power tools for repairs, adjustments, and basic fabrication tasks.
  • Assist with simple metal or wood fabrication tasks to support equipment installation or repair.
  • Lift and move parts and tools up to 49 pounds and perform tasks requiring bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, twisting, and standing.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods (up to 12‑hour shifts) on concrete or similar surfaces.
  • Travel up to 20% as needed to support maintenance activities at other locations.
  • Work flexible schedules, including weekends, nights, and holidays, in support of 24/7 operations.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, shifts, and areas, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
  • Basic PC skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort using hand tools for repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic mechanical and electrical issues with training.
  • Ability to lift up to 49 pounds and perform repetitive physical tasks.
  • Dexterity for manual handling, grasping, and operating foot pedals.
  • Willingness to work in environments with small spaces, dust, odors, temperature changes, noise, vibration, and uneven surfaces.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20%.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or vocational training in mechanical, electrical, or related fields.
  • Experience with automated conveyor systems or controls.
  • Experience repairing material handling equipment.
  • Experience performing preventive or predictive maintenance.
  • Basic metal or wood fabrication experience.
  • Ability to read blueprints or electrical schematics.
  • Introductory knowledge of electrical or electronic principles.
  • Experience using a CMMS.
  • Exposure to robotic or electromechanical systems.
  • Basic troubleshooting of input/output functions in automated systems.
  • Experience supporting small maintenance or improvement projects.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work well with operations and maintenance teams.

Work Environment

This role is based in a large distribution center environment in Woodbury, MN, supporting a full-site project within an automated Amazon facility. The operation runs multiple shift patterns, including front half (Sunday–Wednesday) and back half (Wednesday–Saturday), with typical shifts ranging from 10 to 12 hours. Candidates need to be open to all available shifts, which may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. The facility features extensive Material Handling Equipment, automated conveyor systems, robotics, and electromechanical equipment. Technicians regularly use a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), standard hand tools, power tools, and computers running Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Working conditions may include small or confined spaces, exposure to dust, fumes, odors, hot and cold temperatures both inside and outside, elevated noise levels, vibration, and standing or walking on concrete floors for long periods. Surfaces may be wet or uneven, and the role involves frequent physical activity such as lifting, bending, kneeling, and climbing, requiring appropriate work attire suitable for an industrial, warehouse, and maintenance environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Woodbury, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $29.17 - $29.17/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
