Recruitment Salary Range: $75,925 - $112,386

Salary Grade: NC22

This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workday.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Engineering Supervisor II to lead Building Systems Engineers who review construction plans and specifications for compliance with North Carolina Codes. This position ensures proper application of state statutes, accurate code interpretation, and the protection of life safety for citizens across North Carolina.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and assist Building Systems Engineers in accurate and timely reviews of construction plans and specifications.
• Oversee construction, renovation, repair, and addition plan reviews for public buildings statewide.
• Manage daily work operations, personnel matters, performance management, monthly reporting, staffing, and planning.
• Provide technical assistance to work groups, including fire investigations, storm, hurricane, and flood investigations (SERT duty), and collaborate with the NC Qualification Board.
• Adjust workloads and priorities to support special project requests or stakeholder needs.
• Assist with legislative matters, plan review workflow optimization, and interagency coordination.
• Serve as a member of the NC OSFM State Emergency Response Team (SERT), providing specialized support during emergency incidents.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

• Experience managing engineering tasks and personnel.
• Extensive experience applying the North Carolina Code to active construction projects.
• Level III Code Official Certification in Building, Fire, and Electrical.
• Experience developing professional or educational public presentations.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience including two (2) years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
