Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Eastern Area Health Education Center (Eastern AHEC) is a private, nonprofit educational organization affiliated with East Carolina University (ECU). The mission of Eastern AHEC, in accordance with the Statewide AHEC Program, is to provide and support educational activities and services with a focus on primary care in rural communities and those with less access to resources to recruit, train, and retain the workforce needed to create a healthy North Carolina. Eastern AHEC functions in close collaboration with East Carolina University, and with the other NC University programs in Nursing, Allied Health, Public Health, Medicine, and Pharmacy, as well as other institutions of higher education.

Eastern AHEC serves 23 counties in the eastern part of the state and is one of nine centers located in North Carolina. Governance is by a Board of Directors with representation from regional health care institutions, the community at large, and the community college system. The administrative structure of Eastern AHEC consists of an Executive Director, a Chief Administrative Officer, a Director of Fiscal Services, a Director of Information & Technology Services (ITS), a Director of Communication, a Director of Educational Support Services, and six Division Directors for: Quality Support, Public Health / ORPCE / and Student Services, Mental Health Education, Nursing and Allied Health Education, Continuing Medical Education / Dental / Pharmacy CE Education, Pharmacy Education and Library Services.

The BSOM Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME) was established through a partnership between the Brody School of Medicine and the Eastern Area Health Education Center (EAHEC) to address the ongoing educational needs of physicians within the region and, when appropriate, beyond. Through this collaborative effort, the two organizations provide practicing physicians with high-quality continuing education opportunities that reflect the rapidly evolving medical knowledge base and support the improvement of patient care and outcomes.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Director of Continuing Medical, Oral Health, and Pharmacy Education provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs at Eastern AHEC, advancing the missions of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and Eastern AHEC. Reporting to the Executive Director of Eastern Area Health Education Center and Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education for Brody School of Medicine, the Director of Continuing Medical, Oral Health and Pharmacy Education leads the design, implementation, and evaluation of accredited educational activities for physicians, dentists, pharmacists, and interprofessional healthcare teams.

The Director supervises the Assistant Directors of Continuing Medical Education and staff and ensures the delivery of high-quality, outcomes-driven programming that addresses practice gaps and regional healthcare needs. Core responsibilities include conducting needs assessments; guiding program planning and development; overseeing delivery across in-person, virtual, and hybrid formats; and evaluating impact on professional practice and patient outcomes.

The Director ensures compliance with accreditation standards across disciplines and supports continuous improvement of accreditation processes. Educational offerings range from brief sessions and regularly scheduled series (e.g., Grand Rounds) to multi-hour and multi-day conferences delivered locally and across the region. This role emphasizes innovation in adult learning, including interprofessional education, outcomes-based design, and the use of interactive and emerging technologies. The Director collaborates with academic, clinical, and community partners to expand access to high-quality continuing education and strengthen the regional healthcare workforce.

Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

• Master's degree or other post-baccalaureate degree in public health, a health profession, health education, adult education, social work, health and human performance, or related adjacent field
• Three years of progressive leadership and management experience

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

• Five years of progressive leadership and management experience, preferably withing continuing education or healthcare workforce development.
• Demonstrated expertise in Continuing Medical Education (CME) and continuing education principles, including Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) accreditation criteria, the Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education, and outcomes-based education.
• Proven experience in planning, implementing, or managing accredited continuing education programs (e.g. Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, American Dental Association Continuing Education Recognition Program), including oversight of accreditation processes and compliance requirements.
• Strong experience collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders, including physicians, pharmacists, dentists, and other healthcare professionals to assess educational needs, design effective learning activities, and measure program outcomes.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to develop education materials, accreditation documentation, reports, and presentations for varied audiences.
• Proven ability to build, manage, and sustain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, clinical staff, leadership, accrediting bodies, and community partners.
• Experience with learning management systems, continuing education tracking platforms and data/reporting tools
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive), including document preparation, spreadsheet analysis, report development, presentation creation, calendar management, and virtual collaboration.
• Familiarity with Results-Based Accountability (RBA) or similar outcomes-based performance frameworks.
