Required
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
Minimum of three (3) years of legal experience, with significant exposure to labor and employment law.
Active membership in good standing with the District of Columbia Bar or eligibility to waive into the D.C. Bar.
Candidates eligible for waiver must initiate the admission process prior to employment and obtain D.C. Bar admission within the required timeframe.
Experience representing clients in administrative hearings, investigations, or employment-related proceedings.
Demonstrated ability to analyze complex legal issues and apply legal principles to challenging fact patterns.
Strong legal research, writing, negotiation, advocacy, and oral presentation skills.
Excellent judgment, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
Prior experience in the public sector, education sector, or government legal environment.
Experience handling labor relations matters, employee discipline, discrimination claims, administrative litigation, and workplace investigations.
Familiarity with administrative law and government personnel systems.
The Midtown Group is seeking experienced Attorneys for a long-term contract opportunity supporting a prominent District of Columbia government agency. This role offers the opportunity to provide high-level legal counsel, represent the agency in administrative proceedings, and advise leadership on a broad range of labor and employment matters impacting a large public-sector workforce.
The selected attorneys will join a dynamic legal team responsible for advising executive leadership, administrators, and operational stakeholders on complex employment and workforce-related issues. Candidates should be comfortable managing a diverse caseload, conducting legal research, drafting legal opinions, and representing clients in administrative proceedings.
Position Overview
The Attorney (Labor & Employment) will provide legal advice and representation on employment, labor, administrative, and related legal matters. The role requires strong litigation experience, exceptional legal writing skills, sound judgment, and the ability to analyze complex legal and factual issues.
This position reports to senior legal leadership and works closely with agency administrators, human resources professionals, external counsel, and government stakeholders.
This position is not part of a collective bargaining unit.
This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing requirements throughout the duration of employment.
Key Responsibilities
Advise agency leadership and management regarding labor and employment laws, regulations, and policies.
Interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws to complex employment matters.
Prepare legal memoranda, opinions, reports, and recommendations for agency leadership.
Represent the agency in administrative proceedings and hearings before various tribunals and oversight bodies.
Provide guidance to operational and management personnel regarding personnel actions, workplace investigations, employee relations issues, and policy compliance.
Conduct legal research and analyze the impact of new or proposed legislation and regulatory changes.
Assist in the development, review, and implementation of agency policies, procedures, and programs.
Identify emerging legal risks and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
Coordinate with outside counsel and government legal offices on litigation strategy, discovery matters, and case preparation.
Draft legal correspondence, motions, pleadings, settlement documents, and other legal filings.
Communicate effectively with agency administrators, attorneys, employees, and external stakeholders.
Participate in special projects and perform other legal duties as assigned.
