We're looking for a hands-on Compliance Engineer to help ensure our products meet the safety, performance, and regulatory requirements needed to bring them to market.
This is an opportunity for an experienced electronics professional to combine practical laboratory work, RF/EMC testing, troubleshooting, and product development with growing ownership of product certifications and regulatory compliance. You'll work closely with Hardware Engineering, Product Management, Technical Services, Manufacturing, and external certification agencies to solve technical challenges and help bring reliable, compliant products to market.
What You'll Do
- Lead Compliance Projects: Coordinate assigned compliance projects with Product Management, Engineering, external test laboratories, UL/ETL/Intertek, and other certification agencies. Track project status, testing progress, certification timelines, agency questions, corrective actions, and deadlines, providing regular updates along the way.
- Perform Hands-On Testing: Conduct and coordinate hardware, RF, EMC, immunity, environmental, design-validation, pre-compliance, certification, and troubleshooting tests throughout product development. Perform or coordinate measurements such as radiated emissions pre-scans, peak and output power, occupied bandwidth, spurious emissions, EIRP, and antenna design or configuration verification.
- Identify and Solve Technical Problems: Read schematics, troubleshoot circuitry to the component level, investigate test failures, identify root causes, and work with Engineering on corrective actions and retesting. Perform or coordinate ESD, EFT/burst, radiated immunity, environmental, abnormal-condition, and other product-robustness testing as applicable.
- Support Product Compliance and Certifications: Help ensure products meet applicable UL/ETL, FCC Part 15, ISED, CE/RED/EMC, ETSI/EN, ULC, NFPA, and other relevant requirements. Work with Engineering early in development to identify compliance risks and translate standards into practical design and verification requirements.
- Develop Regulatory Expertise: Build increasing responsibility for interpreting product-safety and security standards, responding to certification-agency questions, supporting product investigations, and managing ongoing certifications. Support FCC/ISED submissions, approved antenna and configuration records, product labeling, user-manual statements, CE directive and standard identification, technical files, risk documentation, test evidence, and Declarations of Conformity.
- Manage Documentation and Product Changes: Develop test plans and maintain accurate records of test equipment, setups, product configurations, firmware, antennas, results, failures, corrective actions, agency correspondence, submission records, certification files, certification numbers, labeling, and supporting technical documentation. Review proposed hardware, component, material, antenna, firmware, and manufacturing changes to determine whether updates, agency notifications, partial retesting, or recertification are needed.
- Support Audits and Ongoing Compliance: Prepare for UL/ETL follow-up inspections and other compliance audits, gather supporting evidence, resolve findings, coordinate corrective actions, and maintain required records. Monitor changes in applicable standards and evaluate their impact on new and existing products.
- Maintain and Improve Laboratory Capabilities: Maintain calibrated test equipment, fixtures, test products, test methods, and equipment records. Recommend new or rental equipment and work with Engineering to expand in-house pre-compliance testing capabilities, helping identify potential issues before formal third-party testing.
- Collaborate and Improve Processes: Answer compliance-related technical questions from customers, Technical Support, Product Management, Engineering, and other departments. Improve compliance processes, testing efficiency, documentation quality, and technical accuracy. As experience develops, represent DMP in appropriate UL, NFPA, industry, and standards-development activities.
- Stay Current and Support the Team: Continually build and demonstrate technical expertise in DMP products, using product specifications, user guides, installation and programming guides, schematics, test procedures, and other company documentation. Follow DMP's Data Classification Standard, company policies, confidentiality requirements, and laboratory safety practices. Contribute to team success by performing other duties as assigned; responsibilities may change as directed by management.
What We're Looking For
- A degree in electrical/electronics technology, electronics engineering, or a combination of education and substantial practical experience.
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience in electronics testing, troubleshooting, design validation, RF/EMC laboratories, or related product development.
- Strong ability to read schematics and troubleshoot analog, digital, power, and RF circuits to the component level.
- Practical experience using electronic and RF test equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, signal generators, real-time spectrum analyzers, power meters, data analyzers, transient/ESD simulators, and environmental chambers.
- Experience with RF/EMC measurements, such as radiated emissions pre-scans, occupied bandwidth, peak/output power, EIRP, antenna patterns, or antenna design verification, is strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of FCC/EMC compliance testing, with the ability and willingness to develop deeper knowledge of FCC Part 15, ISED, UL/ETL, ULC, CE/RED/EMC, ETSI/EN, NFPA, and other standards applicable to DMP products.
- Experience with ESD, EFT/burst, immunity, environmental, or other compliance-related testing is preferred.
- Ability to develop test plans, accurately document test configurations and results, analyze failures, identify root causes, and collaborate with Engineering on corrective actions.
- Willingness to learn regulatory standards, certification processes, technical-file and labeling requirements, and product-change impact evaluation.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects, test samples, agency requests, reports, and deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, technicians, Product Management, certification agencies, and external test laboratories.
Additional experience we value:
- Laboratory leadership, technician mentoring, equipment coordination, or project coordination.
- Direct experience with UL, FCC certifications, CE compliance, certification agencies, or regulatory documentation.
- Familiarity with the electronic security industry or DMP products.
- Direct certification and regulatory experience is preferred, but we recognize that a strong electronics, RF, and EMC professional can develop these skills and grow into greater compliance ownership in this role.
