Perform cooking to ensure meal preparation that meets USDA expectations for Early Childhood Education. Duties are part-time. To foster healthy development of children, by supervising and coordinating daily classroom activities, and providing a safe and nurturing environment for young children to learn and grow.
Essential Job Duties:
· Meal Preparation: Prepares meals in a safe manner that meets licensing and accreditation standards.
o Demonstrate knowledge about health licensing and accreditation standards.
o Cook food to required temperature.
o Monitor refrigerator and freezer temperatures to be at 40 degrees and 0 degrees, respectively.
o Store and label food appropriately in refrigerator and freezer.
o Defrost foods appropriately; and,
o Present food in an attractive manner.
· Cleaning/Sanitation: Maintain a clean work environment.
o Store and label foods appropriately and in a timely manner.
o Wash dishes after use and before leaving for the day.
o Sanitize counters and preparation areas.
o Clean stove after use; and,
o Store dishes and utensils according to Health Department standards.
· Documentation: Effectively document information and records required by agency.
o Complete food orders in a timely manner as requested by supervisor or Site Director
o Track inventory to ensure stock is accurate and food is used according to “fist in, first out” procedure.
o Maintain refrigerator and freezer logs; and,
o Complete USDA food records.
· Assist with meal planning: Plan nutritious meals for the Early Childhood Education Center and Residential Shelter clients.
o Consult with Site Director regarding meal planning.
o Plan meals consistent with USDA, heath licensing and accreditation standards.
o Plan accommodations for children with special allergies or dietary needs.
o Provide opportunities to recognize diversity by planning special meals recognizing ethnic groups; and,
o Prepare meals that are appealing to children.
· Communicate
· Teaching: When appropriate, utilize meal preparation time as an opportunity to teach children and provide them with life skills experience.
Indicators:
o Plan activities to teach children about food principles.
o Communicate with children in a vocabulary that is easily understood by them; and,
o Ensure that activities are safe, and children are safe in cooking environment.
· Professionalism: Act in a professional manner consistent with job description.
Indicators:
o Report to shift, meeting, and training on time.
o Represent the Early Childhood Education Center and the agency to the public in a positive manner at all times.
o Promote self-growth by participating in training as required by supervisor.
o Attend and constructively participates in staff meetings as required by supervisor.
o Maintain appropriate confidentiality boundaries at all times.
o Follow Child Saving Institute policies and procedures.
o Develop and maintain respectful partnerships with parents, community, and coworkers.
o Maintain appropriate boundaries; and,
o Demonstrate an understanding of socioeconomic and cultural characteristics of the service population including factors such as race, gender, and ethnicity.
Other Duties:
· Abide by the Child Saving Institute Credit Purchasing Agreement and ensure that all purchases will be only for the official business and use of CSI.
· Complete other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
· Complete training necessary to perform position and necessary for professional growth.
· Facilitate a team atmosphere by working in partnership with other agency staff and promote a positive working environment.
· Represent the agency and programs in a positive manner to clients, community, organizations, and the public, in general.
Job Requirements:
· High School diploma or equivalent.
· Must be at least 19 years of age.
· A minimum of 6 months experience as a cook.
· Non-profit or childcare experience preferred.
· Ability to interact with clients with sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural and socioeconomic differences in the service population.
· The ability to establish a respectful relationship with persons served to help them gain skills and confidence.
· The ability to collaborate with other personnel and/or service providers or professionals.
· The capacity to maintain a helping role and to intervene appropriately to meet service goals; and set appropriate limits.
· Knowledge of USDA standards, nutrition, meal planning preferred.
· Ability to prepare meals while interacting with youth and children.
· Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
· Ability to communicate with children, parents, police, CPS, and staff.
· Patient, emotionally stable, non-judgmental, and shows a positive attitude.
· Flexibility, creativity, and dependability.
· Ability to appropriately handle confidential information.
· Ability to understand and consistently implement policies and procedures of the agency.
· Ability to interact and work cooperatively and effectively with other personnel and students.
· Ability to accurately record information.
Environment:
· The primary responsibilities of this position are kitchen work with utensils and appliances and includes exposure to heat and cold.
· The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud.
· Employee may be required to change diapers, etc. and may encounter body fluids and must practice Universal Precautions.
Physical Requirements:
· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to handle or feel objects or children; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
· The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
· Ability to run after children, reach with hands and arms, bend, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl.
