Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Launched in 2013, the Department of Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is the first new science department in the College of Arts and Sciences in nearly 40 years. Including the Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory (CHANL) and the graduate program in material sciences, Applied Physical Sciences has united numerous scientific entities on campus to further its mission of finding interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems. Its newest endeavor, BeAM (Be A Maker), is a university-wide initiative that incorporates Making into research, education, and entrepreneurship. BeAM is comprised of several spaces, including a makerspace in Hanes Art Center, Carmichael Residence Hall, and a 3,400 square foot Makerspace in Murray Hall, all of which serve the entire UNC community.

Position Summary

The Administrative Support Associate serves as a key member of the department's administrative team and provides professional administrative support to faculty, staff, students, and visitors. This position is responsible for coordinating departmental administrative operations, supporting meetings and events, managing travel and expense processes, assisting with facilities coordination, and serving as a primary point of contact for departmental constituents.

Working in a collaborative environment, the position ensures efficient day-to-day operations and contributes to a positive and professional experience for faculty, staff, students, and external visitors.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Management Preferences

  • Experience working in higher education or another complex service-oriented environment.
  • Experience coordinating events, travel, or office operations.
  • Familiarity with university administrative systems and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while supporting a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong organizational, customer service, and communication skills.
