So you understand HTML, SEO, ASP. Writing code? No problem. You can build websites in your sleep. But when it’s time to write your resume, you’re stumped.
You probably searched for “web developer resume examples” and ended up here. Which is great, because we’ve got a sample web developer resume you can use to build your own. In a sea of resume templates, this is the one that will make your years of experience and bevy of technical skills stand out to a hiring manager. With a resume like this, your recruiter won’t know what hit them.
After you’ve personalized this resume, upload it to CareerBuilder so we can match you with positions. You’ll be able to apply to web developer jobs with the click of a mouse, and companies will find your information when they search for web developers in your area.
Follow these quick and easy steps to make your resume shine.
1. We don’t need to tell tech geniuses like you that companies use AI to find the best resumes, so make sure to avoid any fancy formatting that would make yours hard to read. Extra points if you include keywords from the job description.
2. At the top of your resume, use the job title you are applying for, not the one you had last. The hiring manager will be sorting through a lot of application materials, so don’t make them guess which position you’re after. Include your phone number and email address so that you’re easy to reach. You might also include your home address, but this isn’t strictly necessary for every role. If you have an online portfolio or website where you show off past work, include a link here.
3. Keep your professional summary concise. Tell them who you are, what you do and how long you’ve been doing it. If you’ve won a major award or achieved something notable in the industry, add this to your professional summary as well. The whole thing should fit on an index card. Pay close attention to the job description to see if there’s a keyword or two you could slip into this section.
4. Lead with key skills. As a web developer, you’ve got plenty, so this plays to your favor. List all the major abilities you use in web development: programming languages you know, certifications you’ve earned, specialized tools you can use, as well as so-called “soft skills” like communication, organization and time management. Employers need your technical expertise, but they also need a reliable worker who can integrate into a team, work well with others and translate web development issues to people who work outside your department. Be ready to discuss how you’ve used soft skills successfully in a job interview.
5. Explain any gaps, especially if they’re related to the pandemic. If you need some help, check out our guide to explaining why you left your last job. Hiring managers will understand if you give them the opportunity. In the below example, notice how this candidate has mentioned a pandemic-related job loss, and how they took that opportunity to learn new skills by getting an SEO certification. If you’re having trouble explaining a gap on your resume, try addressing it in your cover letter and prepare to discuss it in job interviews.
6. Tell a story with your resume. This isn’t just a list of tasks you’ve performed. Include details and paint a picture. In the example below, the candidate doesn’t just write that they created user interfaces — they specifically write that their work resulted in 50% faster load times and link to the two media sites they launched. It’s all about the details.
7. Include your relevant education at the end of your resume, starting with your highest educational achievement. For most web developer positions, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree; include your B.S. or B.A. degree, the name of your university and the year you graduated. If you earned a graduate-level degree in a related field, include it, too. You might include academic achievements, like graduating summa cum laude, but keep this section to a minimum. In most non-academic fields, your work experience section will trump educational laurels. No need to mention your high school, unless that’s your only education.
OK, feeling prepared? Let’s show them why you’re the perfect candidate. Copy and paste the resume template below and fill it in with your own personal information. Then upload it to CareerBuilder to find your next web developer job.
Oh, and one more thing: Many companies also expect a cover letter that goes into more depth about your professional experience and job goals. Don’t miss our guide to writing the perfect cover letter.
