Q: Tell us about your job! What do you do? What does a typical day look like in your role?
A: I am working as a project manager in London at the Broadbean/CareerBuilder office. I am primarily managing a couple of U.K. development teams working toward client integrations. I am also looking at some tech projects that are outside of the product work and, since last month, I have also started managing U.S. development team.
My day starts with a meeting with tech leads from different teams along with the VP of technology in which we discuss the tech aspects of projects and anything important that the tech leads want to raise or discuss with other tech leads. This meeting gives the right vision to all the tech leads regarding which direction we are moving and what is a priority for their teams.
After this, I have my daily stand-up with the teams I manage in which we discuss the work items and any blockers that the team is facing. I try to resolve any blockers I can from my side and raise any blockers/challenges with right people so that those are resolved quickly and the team can work without any blockers. Depending on the day of the week, I have other meetings with the development teams like backlog grooming, sprint planning, sprint retrospective, and sprint demo.
All these meetings ensure that we discuss as a team what needs to be done, how it will be done, and once something is developed it is shown to all members of the team. We discuss if we can improve on things so that we can achieve greater productivity in future sprints.
As a project manager, I also create sprint reports with goals which are presented to development and the product head so that they are aware of the teams’ progress, and we discuss what to prioritize regarding the next development work items that are aligned with product and the company’s roadmap. I always try to keep my team motivated and focused to achieve the goals we have.
Q: How has your career grown since starting at CareerBuilder?
A: Though it has not been a year yet for me working here, I can still say that my career is on the right track as far as what I expected. I am getting a great exposure working with different teams located in the U.K. and the U.S. and there is so much to learn from everyone working here. The management is always open to listen to suggestions and improvements and this has given me more confidence in making processes that will benefit teams to achieve greater productivity and at the same time gives visibility to the leadership team on the development work items.
Q: What’s the most satisfying part about your job?
A: Working with different teams as a project manager and as a people manager is the most satisfying part of job. I try to make sure that everyone within the team enjoys the work they do in a positive environment, and this also keeps their morale high.
Q: What is your favorite quote?
A: ‘TEAM’ – Together Everyone Achieves More.
I really feel that this word (quote) is very important and if each one of us remembers this always in whatever work we do, wherever we doit, and always sticks together and works as a team, this is surely going to help us achieve greater results.
Q: What are your favorite hobbies?
A: Playing cricket and tennis.
