May supervise staff • Refers patients to medical specialists or other practitioners when necessary • Advises patients on health care including health promotion, disease, illness and accident prevention • Coordinates work with nurses, social workers, rehabilitation therapists, pharmacists, psychologists and other health care providers • Directs and coordinates activities of nurses, students, assistants, specialists, therapists, and other medical staff • Examines patients and take their histories, order laboratory tests, X-rays and other diagnostic procedures and consult with other medical practitioners to evaluate patients' physical and mental health • Prescribes or administers treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury • Provides emergency medical care. • Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine or Family Medicine • Experience in treating persons with serious and persistent medical illnesses, and in providing care as leader and member of an interdisciplinary treatment team • Experience working with consumers in adult mental health, addictive disease, and forensic psychiatry.
