Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Utility Worker Assistant performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and operation of water distribution and wastewater collection system facilities and appurtenances. This position may work as part of a crew or independently on assigned tasks and performs related work as required.

This is a part-time, entry-level position that provides an opportunity to develop practical knowledge and experience in municipal water and wastewater utility operations.

Selection Process

Prior to appointment, applicant must authorize a reference check. Also prior to appointment, a background check must be completed, which involves fingerprinting for submission to the Department of Justice.

• Assists work crews with general maintenance, repair, and upkeep of water distribution and wastewater collection systems, facilities, and appurtenances.
• Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs and adjustments to tools, equipment, and facilities.
• Uses common hand tools and equipment in the performance of assigned duties.
• Responds to inquiries from members of the public regarding routine utility work and refers questions or concerns to the appropriate staff member when necessary.
• Maintains accurate records, logs, and documentation of work performed.
• Assists Utility crews during emergency response activities, as assigned.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential functions of the position satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, and other qualifications required for successful performance of the job.

Education and Experience:

• Graduation from high school or equivalent.
• Previous experience in water, wastewater, utilities, construction, maintenance, or a related

field is desirable, but not required.

License and Certification:

• Possession of a valid California Class C drivers license and maintenance of a satisfactory

driving record in accordance with the City of Morgan Hill driving standards.

Knowledge of:

• Basic use and care of common hand tools.
• Basic work safety practices and procedures.
• Basic principles and practices related to the maintenance of water distribution and

wastewater collection systems, or the ability to learn these practices.

• Safe work practices applicable to outdoor maintenance and utility work.
• Capable of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff.

Ability to:

• Read, understand, and apply written instructions, procedures, and safety requirements.
• Learn and perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks.
• Use common hand tools and equipment safely and effectively.
• Work independently on assigned tasks or exercise appropriate judgment regarding when to

seek assistance or direction.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers,

contractors, and members of the public.

• Maintain accurate records and documentation of work performed.
• Safely perform physical tasks associated with utility maintenance work.
• Comply with City policies and procedures, and applicable safety rules and regulations.

Supplemental Information

Special Requirements:

• Must be willing and available to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings,

weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs, as operational needs require.

• Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and in environments associated

with water and wastewater utility maintenance.

• Must comply with all applicable City safety policies, procedures, and practices.
• Must be able to work independently, often with limited/no supervision.

• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral

vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described below are representative of

those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable

• The employee generally works approximately 5% indoors and 95% outdoors, and the position

requires regular travel.

• Indoor work is typically performed in a temperature-controlled office environment.
• Outdoor work is performed in varying weather conditions and may require visiting developed

and undeveloped sites at various stages of construction.

• Noise levels are generally moderate; however, the employee may occasionally be exposed to

high noise levels from sources including, but not limited to, outdoor construction equipment.

Part-time, temporary positions are non-benefitted, at-will positions. Part-time employees are enrolled in the PARS retirement system and the employee pays 7.5%, which is deducted from the employees payroll check. The PARS retirement system is in lieu of participating in social security. Part-time employees participate in the Medicare portion of social security as that is a required program.

You may accrue up to 40 hours a year in sick leave based on the number of hours worked within the year.
