Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg RN for a 13-week night shift assignment on a Surgical Acute unit, requiring at least 1 year of experience and an active IL RN license.

Details

  • Acute care setting on a 63-bed Surgical Acute unit (49 private, 9 observation beds)
  • Patient population includes post-op surgical, trauma, and overflow medical patients requiring dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NGs, central lines, and TPN
  • RN to patient ratios of 4-5 on days and 5-6 on nights, which may increase up to 1:6 days and 1:7 nights when needed
  • EPIC EMR used for charting
  • 12-hour night shifts from 1930-0730
  • Every other weekend required (Saturday and Sunday)
  • Rotates every other holiday
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Travelers float first to units with similar experience level; ICU RNs floating to general units take a team of 3 patients
  • No RN drip titration required except Heparin
  • Charge RNs (2 pre-assigned per shift) do not take patient assignments; house supervisor available 24/7
  • PCTs assist with vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, and ambulation at a ratio of 7-10 patients per PCT on days and 10-15 on nights
  • No ventilators on unit; RNs manage inhalers and may place patients on CPAP, while RT manages nebulizers
  • Telemetry monitoring available via Phillips monitors with central station monitor techs; bedside RNs do not read strips
  • Any scrub color permitted
  • Unit orientation includes 2 preceptor shifts plus one 12-hour shift for EPIC and professional orientation with the unit educator

Requirements

  • Active IL RN license required at time of consideration
  • Current BLS (AHA) certification
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Strong post-op care skills and critical thinking ability
  • Good bedside manner and team-oriented approach
  • Comfortable asking for help when needed
  • Negative drug screen required for all panels

Additional Information

  • Provide post-op surgical nursing care including wound care, IV therapy, pain management, and management of drains, NGs, central lines, and TPN
  • Work alongside dedicated charge RNs and 24/7 house supervisor support
  • Block scheduling may be considered if approved at time of contract; travelers do not self-schedule
  • First-time travelers may be considered for this position
  • Local candidates within 50 miles are eligible for a local rate
