Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg RN for a Surgical Acute night shift position requiring at least 1 year of post-op nursing experience and an active IL RN license.

Details

  • Surgical Acute unit in an acute care hospital setting with 63 beds (49 private, 9 observation)
  • Patient population includes post-op surgical, trauma, and overflow medical patients requiring dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NGs, central lines, and TPN
  • RN to patient ratios of 4-5:1 on days and 5-6:1 on nights, potentially up to 1:6 days and 1:7 nights when needed
  • 12-hour night shifts, 1930-0730
  • Every other weekend required (Saturday and Sunday)
  • Rotating holiday coverage required, every other holiday
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Uses EPIC EMR
  • Some patients on telemetry with Phillips monitors; central monitor techs read strips, not bedside RNs
  • No ventilator management required; RT manages nebulizers, RNs manage inhalers and can place patients on CPAP or high flow
  • No drip titration required except Heparin
  • Charge RNs (2 pre-assigned per shift) do not take patient assignments; house supervisor available 24/7
  • PCT support available at 7-10 patients per PCT on days and 10-15 on nights, assisting with vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, and ambulation
  • Travelers are first to float, floating to units of similar experience level
  • Block scheduling may be considered if approved at time of contract; travelers do not self-schedule

Requirements

  • Active IL RN license required
  • BLS certification (AHA) required
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Post-op surgical care experience and strong critical thinking skills required
  • Good bedside manner and ability to work well within a team required
  • Negative drug screen required for all panels

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care for post-op surgical and overflow medical patients including wound care, IV therapy, drain management, and pain management
  • Unit-specific orientation includes 2 shifts with a preceptor plus one 12-hour shift for EPIC and professional orientation with a unit educator
  • Scrubs of any color permitted
  • Local candidates with a permanent address within 50 miles are eligible for local pay rates
  • No radius rule restricting eligibility for the position
  • COVID vaccination is not required for consideration
