  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week, excluding applicable orientation and holiday scheduling exceptions
  • Weekend Requirement: Three weekends within each six-week schedule
  • Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
  • Orientation: 12 hours
  • Float Expectations: First to float within the nurse’s skill set, including nearby affiliated campuses when needed; advance notice is provided for cross-campus assignments

Cardiac Stepdown Travel RN Requirements

  • Current, active compact Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • AHA BLS certification
  • AHA ACLS certification
  • NIHSS certification
  • Associate degree or nursing certificate
  • At least 2 years of recent, solid stepdown nursing experience plus 1 completed travel contract, or at least 5 years of solid stepdown experience without prior travel experience
  • Recent Epic charting experience; completion of a charting checkoff class is required
  • Strong cardiac telemetry knowledge, including 12-lead EKG interpretation; successful completion of telemetry testing is required
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and within a blended stepdown and medical-surgical telemetry environment

Cardiac Stepdown RN Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, evidence-based nursing care for post-procedure cardiac, vascular, and neurological patients
  • Care for patients following cardiac catheterizations, stent placement, pacemaker or ICD procedures, and ablations
  • Recognize and manage STEMI, NSTEMI, sepsis, CVA, seizure, possible TBI, and DKA presentations
  • Perform comprehensive cardiac and neurological assessments, including NIHSS assessments
  • Interpret telemetry and 12-lead EKGs and respond promptly to changes in patient condition
  • Initiate and titrate ordered infusions, including Cardizem, amiodarone, Cardene, nitroglycerin, insulin, and heparin
  • Provide post-cardiac catheterization care, including femoral access and TR band management
  • Manage chest tubes and perform peripheral IV insertion
  • Demonstrate strong assessment, prioritization, communication, and critical-thinking skills
  • Float within the nurse’s competency range and support patient care across nearby affiliated campuses as assigned
  • Contribute to a teaching environment by precepting students and new team members when requested

Cardiac Stepdown Unit Highlights

  • 19-bed blended unit with designated stepdown and medical-surgical/telemetry beds
  • Typical night assignment of approximately 1:4 for stepdown patients, with medical-surgical assignments up to 1:7
