  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Unit: 19-bed blended cardiac stepdown, medical-surgical, and neuro unit
  • Typical Patient Ratio: 1:5–6 on day shift
  • Weekend Requirement: Three weekends within each six-week schedule
  • Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
  • Float Expectation: First to float within your skill set, including occasional cross-campus assignments with advance notice

Cardiac Stepdown Travel RN Requirements

  • At least 2 years of recent, solid cardiac stepdown nursing experience and at least 1 completed travel contract, or 5 years of solid cardiac stepdown experience without prior travel experience
  • Current, active compact Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Current AHA BLS, AHA ACLS, and NIHSS certifications
  • Recent EPIC charting experience; completion of a telemetry competency assessment and EPIC checkoff is required
  • Associate degree, nursing diploma, or qualifying nursing certificate
  • Strong telemetry knowledge and the ability to interpret 12-lead EKGs
  • Demonstrated assessment, prioritization, communication, and critical-thinking skills
  • Ability to work 12-hour day shifts, participate in weekend and holiday rotation, and float within the assigned skill set

Cardiac Stepdown RN Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for patients recovering from cardiac catheterization, stent placement, pacemaker or ICD procedures, ablations, and other cardiac interventions
  • Care for patients with STEMI, NSTEMI, carotid endarterectomy recovery needs, sepsis, CVA, seizures, possible traumatic brain injury, and DKA
  • Perform focused and comprehensive cardiac and neurological assessments, including NIHSS assessments
  • Interpret telemetry and 12-lead EKGs and respond promptly to changes in patient condition
  • Initiate and titrate ordered infusions, including Cardizem, amiodarone, Cardene, nitroglycerin, insulin, and heparin
  • Provide post-cardiac catheterization care, including femoral access site and TR band management
  • Manage chest tubes, establish peripheral IV access, and deliver evidence-based care for complex medical-surgical patients
  • Recognize and escalate clinical deterioration while collaborating with providers and the interdisciplinary care team
  • Accurately document patient care in EPIC and support a positive, team-oriented patient experience
  • Participate in a teaching environment that may include precepting students and newly hired team members
